Looking For Historical Japan D20.........

The bad news is that my friend at the game shop told me that Gold Rush Games is now defunct, if this is true then you may need to get Sengoku now before it is gone. He also said that the various liscene they had have been picked up by other people. Does anyone know if this is correct?

I can assert that this statement is incorrect.

http://www.goldrushgames.com/ is still live, for one thing....

Have you considered buying some GURPS books for historical background? They tend to be rather brief in some cases (for instance, experts cringe at their attempt at Egyptian history; but considering entire libraries have been written about Egyptian history, what do you expect for under 200 pages, including game content?), but in general get good reviews.

I don't prefer to wait but I haven't got any money right now, so that is the way I must make things...

As for GURPS, they usually are good, I also consider them whenever I think of a kind of culture or background, the only waste for me is the game part, since I don't like GURPS much and have not played it for ages!

Many people i know like it, anyway, maybe theyhave some supplements that I can borrow and read...

While I value many GURP worldbook supplements -- from Roman Empire to WWII: Dogfaces -- Feudal Japan is one product I would not recommend regarding this thread's topic. Sorry.

Ahhh, but the name "Oriental adventures" suggest some thing in particular while "dungeons and dragons" does not. Also, if OA was as general as DND3e was, then I would be happy as long as they include the proper generic character classes and asian style feats, skills, armor and weapons then you could make it what you want, without all the work that it will take to pick out and discard the Rokugan info.
Avalanche, I think I have heard of there books I wonder if they are any good? Does anyone know the link to there web site?

Oriental Adventures has a big D&D logo on it. If you expect anything but a D&D form of "asian" gameplay then you've misled yourself into believing that it should be something else.

And they have plenty of "generic" Asian material, even if you don't extract the Rokugan-specific game mechanics.

I agree with the other posters who recommend Sengoku from Gold Rush Games. It has more useful information on old Japan than any book I have found (including non-game books). It is very, very good. I use it in my d20 Rokugan game religiously.

Try to see if you can find a used copy though. I got one in a used bookstore for $10.00.

The GURPS Japan book is very well done. I think OA and that should be enough. There's a side bar in OA that deals with honor and I'd stress that heavily. I think both of those books should be good enough to work with. Plus a few Kurwasawa films thrown in for good measure!

As an aside there's an article on the Japanese Saigo rebellion of 1877 in the August Military History that would make a great adventure background for a modern type game. I'm sure you could change it to a fantasy setting too.
