Looking for opinions on hijacking a player's spell (I DM)

I used the flickering between two planes, the one for the archon, and the one with the merut, idea. The player was really excited about it, and the others were amused by it. The only kind of moment killing bit is that the player can pick the most awful moments to be a bit of a ditz, so his answer to "So which do you pick?" was "I put him here". He can be really bad to not pay attention for more than a minute or so, and then answer the question he thinks you'll ask. But I know he got what was going on, and to him it was just so obvious he would pick the archon, that he didn't realize he needed to tell us for sure that he did. But the idea and despite the quirks the game segment itself still went really well.
