Looking for Rafael Chandler (author of Dread)

I'm trying to get hold of Mr. Chandler to ask him a question. Anyone know where I might be able to contact him - as he isn't answering emails (or mine aren't getting to him for some reason)?

He's been around these boards a few time... do a search on dread, and you should get his screen name.

Note that Chandler has nothing to do with Dread (the horror RPG that uses Jenga to resolve tasks). He wrote Dread: The First Book of Pandemonium (an entirely different RPG). That having been said, try Politically Incorrect games -- I know that they've been in contact. If you're looking for the folks behind the other Dread, you need to contact them via their website.

Thanks for the clarification there (Little did I know there was more than one) :)

No problem. I suspect that you want Epidiah over at The Impossible Dream, as the other Dread is pretty much dead and gone (there was news of a revival, though it never materialized).

Hi there! Sorry I didn't post sooner, but I only discovered this thread by chance.

If you've been sending me email, and you haven't gotten a response, rest assured that it wasn't deliberate! Maybe my spam filter is blocking you. If nothing else works, PM me your email address and I'll try contacting you from a different email account. One way or another, we'll work this out.

If you have questions about the new edition of Dread: The First Book of Pandemonium, please visit http://www.dread-rpg.com.

Hope to hear from you soon!

Best regards,
Rafael

I have a few questions based on things that have apparently transpired since we last spoke. I recall PIG announcing a second edition of Dread that never materialized, so is this that product or is this simply a cleaned up revision of the original? Also, did the cosmology changes that you mentioned being slated for the PIG edition (namely the seceret history being dropped) show up here?

Hi there, James! Good to see you again.

Great questions. Let's see...

Although Brett is a talented guy, and PIG is a really great company, I ultimately decided to take the new edition of Dread: The First Book of Pandemonium in a different direction. It took a lot longer than I expected (since Real Life kept rearing its ugly head), but the new edition is finally available at Lulu: http://stores.lulu.com/pandemonium.

The Unrated Edition of Dread is a revision of the original, featuring 100 additional pages of content, as well as all-new layout and artwork. Rules have been streamlined, and the cosmology has been rewritten from scratch (and much of the text has been rewritten or heavily edited). The whole book just 'feels' different.

There are a few downloads at http://www.dread-rpg.com that show off the new look of Dread (Pandemonium).

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Take care.

I think you just won $25! As you know, the old 'secret history' angle was a big issue for me because it was extremely heavy-handed and seemed to be less about providing context for the game than a contrived attempt to shock the reader. One more question: Is there any kind of mechanical support for PCs gaining redemption (on a personal level) in the new edition?

[Edit: I just read the Drive mechanics which seem to be heavily influenced by Tim Kirk's game Hearts & Souls. Very cool and in the vein of what I'd be looking for in terms of more thematic support from the mechanics. I'll definitely pick up a copy of Dread next payday.]

Tell you what. If you want, email me (my contact info's on the web site), and I'll tell you exactly what the new backstory is. That way, you can decide whether you like it prior to purchasing the book. Just don't ruin it for anyone, since it's not something that the player characters know at the beginning of the game. ;)

As for the Redemption stat, that's been changed. There's now a core mechanic called Fury that allows players to perfurm various stunts. At the beginning of each session, you begin with 12 points of Fury that you can expend along the way (by executing foolhardy and extremely risky attacks, or by shrugging off damage). During each session, there are various objectives that you can complete to pick up extra points of Fury, replenishing your score along the way.

Now, I'm assuming you meant the Redemption score from the first edition of Dread (Pandemonium). But if you were referring to the process of being redeemed, then no. This game doesn't delve into that kind of redemption. When I run the game at cons, I describe it as an R-rated cop show where the perps are flesh-eating demons and the detectives know black magic. It's a game about kicking in doors and blowing up cars with fireballs and turning your intestines into six-foot lampreys that erupt from your gut and attack people...

And so forth. Sorry, I'm rambling. I get excited just thinking about it.

Talk to you soon,
Rafael
