Looking for some clarification on a feat...

The feat Touch of Golden Ice does its DC scale like normal poison 10 + 1/2 racial hit die + Con Modifer? I've done some looking around before i turned to here and i didnt find a clear answer. Also can you increase its DC via Virulent Poison or Ability Focus....

Oh and before you ask i was thinking of perhaps using the feat on a Animal Companion.

Thanks Felnor

The feat should really have scaling in it's description if it does (which it does not). It would seem that the ravage does not scale.

Since ravages are supernatural in nature and act LIKE poison but are not considered to be poison I'm not sure there can be an argument for such scaling under consistency. Especially when immunity to poison does not confer immunity to ravages.

Having looked at the Leskylor which has the feat there is no mention of scaling.

Increasing the DC:

  • Ability Focus would seem to fit if you subscribe that using the feat makes the attack special (which I do).
  • Virulent Poison: I wouldn't but only because ravages =/= poison. I can easily see an equivalent feat being used.
  • Would they stack? I'd probably say yes but not sure how it goes RAW wise.

From the feat section of BoED:
Only intelligent characters of good alignment and the highest moral standards can acquire exalted feats,

By RAW I don't think you would be able to take it (without DM approval/houseruling) because an Animal Companion would need to be :

  • Good aligned: which (quickly glancing at the PHB)they are not, they are neutral.
  • Intelligent: I would not think that "animal intelligence" is what they meant, anything with >=3 INT is not an animal.
  • Highest Moral Standards: I'd say that an animal doesn't really have ANY moral standards in the way it is meant here, from the MM1: "Animals are not governed by a human sense of morality"
The only way I could see myself allowing this is with a back story and theme for the PC + AC and thus using (or abusing ) it in some way within the campaign.

I was gonna become a Arcane Heirophant thus making my animal companion also my familer so i t would qualify for the intelligence requirment and im pretty sure that it then also share my allignment if its my familer.
Also i was thinking of making it celestial via the Exalted Companion feat.

Shame about no scaling DC though I had some really sick ideas for my Dire Wolf.

There is nothing in the PHB about familiars changing to the alignment of their master. Again all of them are animals (so Neutral).

I don't see Arcane Heirophant saying anything about companion familiar alignment.

Arcane Hierophant was from Races of the Wild, right? And where is this Touch of Golden Ice from? Also, I think you should go with the given tips, mainly the one of giving an Animal Companion the benefits of a Familiar...or was it vice-versa?

This makes me smile. Not only because it's an interesting idea, but I tried the feat out as well with my Ogre Cleric of Zagyg. Good times.

The one thing to remember is that Touch of Golden Ice is an Exalted Feat from Book of Exalted Deeds. Getting them is different from regular feats, as is stated at the beginning of the Feats chapter. Need permission from the DM (of course), for they are handed down from agents of good (making them supernatural, not extraordinary). How you go about getting them is DM interpretation, but as it goes.

On the TGOI itself, the DC does not scale. It's exactly as it states in the Ravages and Afflictions section of the book. The DC could possibly be increased with other feats, but that's something you need to talk with your DM about. On that note: it was decided by my DM that I can't be wearing any Gloves of Dexterity, via the wording of "bare hand, fist, or natural weapon" on who contracts the Golden Ice. A ridiculous ruling when I look back on it, but I didn't know better at the time, so... *shrug*

Celestial Familiar and Exalted Companion are also in the book, allowing you choices of such creatures as listed. These Companions are Magical Beasts, mind you, though the same traits that effect a regular companion still apply. How this all works together with Arcane Hierophant, I don't know.

In the end, do the research and verify with the DM. You got some interesting prospects here.

P.S. All Exalted Feats make you radiate an aura of goodness as well. Just thought I'd note. ;)
