Heres one I lamented to a buddy I would never get to run. The ideas were sparked/stolen from Stephen Lawheads Celtic Crusade series and Katherine Kurtz's Knights of the Blood.
The Main campaign is set circa 1940 in an earth where there remain some vestiges of Magic (d20 Past?). The PCs are members of a secret Roman Catholic Order diedicated to Finding or Defending true relics of the Faith (Crown of Thorns, True Cross, Holy Grail) from various groups, (Nazis, Bad Chruchfolk etc). You would get to use some cool places as backdrops (St Peters, Nurmeberg Rallys, London during the Blitz)
Somehow, this campaign has a flashback (D&D) to the Crusades, allowing more cool venues such as Jerusalem c1096, or the Pyramids in Egypt.
Perhaps the PCs report to a group of Former Popes who never died but live on secretly through the power of the grail...
Sadly, we play only once per month, and I don't see this getting developed further.
