Just thought of another... Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier. In blurb-speak, its like a cross between JLA/JLU and Watchmen that survives with its optimism intact. Best thing written about the classic DC Universe characters I've read in a long time (and it includes just about all of the them, though the story spends a lot of its time hovering around Hal Jordan becoming Green Lantern.)
