"Looks like we're going to win this battle . . . in about 90 minutes from now."

I mean with knock banned, magic is still available. A combination of silence with a barbarian's axe, for example, might serve very well.

See? Magic is still the first resort.

Not to everyone. I'd dare say that finding creative uses for your character's abilities is fun for a lot of people, and keeps a game fresh and exciting.

And...?

So, you see no situation where magic is not the best way to kill a monster and take its stuff?

It's all about the explosions.

Which is why you ban knock.

Again, we're already talking about a system where knock is banned. This was about the use of silence to let the barbarian hack the door open, and why this was not the best solution, therefore keeping magic available as a solution, but not as the first resort.

If you need to hack a door down silently, you're violating Hong's zeroth law of fantasy, viz: if you can't fix it with a sword, fix it with a fireball. If you can't fix it with a fireball, it isn't worth fixing.

There's also "then fix it with the right word to the right ear" and "then fix it with some sleight of hand". And there's a lot of varying opinions on the "right order" of those fixes.

Looks like we are going to end this thread.................in about 90 years from now.
So soon?

Nah, still sounds boring.

One could also say that it's hard to change hongs favorite playstyle and shouldn't expect him to not prefer a game supporting his style more then hindering it. ;) Though I am not sure that's relevant.

Actually, that combination is super broken and I thank God every time I play 4e that it's no longer available. Invalidating all enemy casters, coming up!
