"Lord of Light" RPG?

I'd have to agree that it would really, be much closer to a superheroes campaign than a D&D/D20 kind of world.

On the power staying through incarnations. If you mean the body transfers, then yes it does. But they are really more akin to getting a new body than a reincarnation. If you mean that when they are killed, their replacements inherit their powers then no. They just pick suitable candidates from among the demi-gods. Unless they got to keep one of Yama's toys...

Lord of Light was one of the primary inspirations for Nobilis.

You could come at the game another way, and use Exalted or a superhero system. It depends on how you want to model the abilities of the characters.

So, I've had a copy of LoL sitting on my shelf for several years but haven't read it yet. Is it a stand-alone piece of fiction, or a series like the Chronicles of Amber?

Excellent book. Excellent author. Bigger than life characters. Not sure how it would play out, but I'd like nothing better than to put my faux coins in a pray-o-mat!

Standalone, the best piece of fiction Zelazny ever wrote, and one of my top five books of all time. Read it!

I agree that supers would be the way to go. They mention a weird mutation as being the original source for their attributes. Yama is a gadgeteer (mostly). Sam has the energy blaster powers plus machine control tricks from his mastery of electricity. The whole initial war was Supers versus Aliens, except in versus since the heroes were invading the alien's world.
