Lord of the Oscars

Only if you keep bringing up Ben Affleck in the conversation, which BTW he is just one-half of the award-winning original screenplay team for Good Will Hunting.

Sofia Coppola should be given props for getting the award on her own.

I agree that Sean Austin was fantastic. It is sad, IMHO, that none of the acting was recognized by a nomination.

Is it true that no one in the cast could qualify for a Best Actor/Supporting Actor award, because of the ensemble nature of the movie? Meaning, are there rules or requirements somewhere that define what categoty a certain role falls into, and none of the LotR parts fit?

To, me it is part political, part critical. Sometimes when you watch a movie (and academy members has to watch a lot of movies), one actor or actress stands out in his or her performance above the ensemble cast. Then there is only 5 slots to fill in the nomination. I believe if had there been a sixth slot, Sean Astin would have been in with those 5 nominees for Best Supporting Actor.
