As time tells..

Yes, in the beginning..it was Star Wars for me, seen what came after in books, comics, and other stuff...which I was ween on.

Then I saw the LOTR cartoons, and like it, but never understood it completely (no books were read), then years later, what was done to bring to LIVE film...open my eyes (and still, no books were read to this day).

George, yes, he was original in tale.

Tolkein...his telling was epic.

In the End, all the tales created by him, gave birth to others that came after his writings in some form or another.

The mantle has returned to the original spot if has lefted.

This is my view...that is all. ;)

Return of the Jedi weighs too heavily, in my mind, against the Star Wars trilogy for me to be able to vote for it. I would love to hunt Ewoks.

While I loved the Star Wars movies, they were much more uneven than LotR. Also, LotR's low point is Star Wars' high point, and I think that weakens Star Wars overall. It's always better to end on a positive note.

One factor that we should look at while deciding this, is that most of us here have read the LOTR Books, so when you watched Star Wars (or any of the Star Wars movies that you liked) for the first time back in the day, you were blown away (mostly because it was new and creative). Unfortunately, this is not the case with the LotR movies, so I believe that it would be harder for the LotR movies to be in the same catagory. There was never a book(s) before the Star Wars movie (or a cartoon movie) that set the standard for Sci-Fi genere. As I see it, Tolkein has created more waves in the Fantasy relm than Lucas has in the Sci-Fi or Fantasy relm (starwars being a sci-fi/fantasy film). I think it's even harder today to suprise or excite people in film because so much has already been done. Something to think about....

If I were stuck on a desert isle with a dvd player and one DVD from each trilogy, I would pick Empire Strikes Back (I know, it's not on DVD yet) and ... probably Return of the King at this point.

And then if I had to choose between the two of those, I'd pick RotK. So I guess in some way LotR gets my vote.

I'm not a big fan of the changes PJ made to the LOTR story, but I was blown away by his visual representation of Middle Earth from the cities to the creatures.

The battle scenes in The Two Towers and especially Return of the King have no equal in cinema that I know of. If someone can tell me a movie with a battle scenes as unbelievably powerful and epic as Return of the King, then I want to know the name of that movie because I definitely want to watch it.

As it stands....Troy, with Bard Pitt, might qualify in that catergory, but that is next year to see...if you saw the previews, especially the scene where the ships are shown, but there is flaw, the original ship I can detected with ease, the others, of course were CGI, but the question is, how to tell?

Just look at the bow (of the original), when the waters part (then look at the others).
