Lord Ogglebottoms Odd Tasks: All in a Nights Work (DM: DMDanW, Judge: Renau1g)

Gloom follows the man. He keeps a good distance, as he is not a very subtle man, but from his position, he tries to anticipate the bearded man path and actions by looking at his behavior: how he walks, where he is looking at. It is obvious that the man is heading straight down this street, towards the warehouse section of the wharf.

Thorn decides to use the buildings as cover. Climbing and jumping from rooftops like he would trees in his forest. He peeks at his prey through the alley, then goes one street over and runs parallel for one block, only to sight his prey down the next alley before repeating the process. Thorn manages to pace his prey, catching glimpses of him every so often, but is a block away from where the others are.

Jehad realizes that stealth would be more preferable here than strength or an ambush and nearly melts into the shadow of the nearby buildings. Slowly and quietly stalking his prey until he finds the moment to strike.

Gellan tries to keep up through the unfamiliar streets. Making sure that he can see both Gloom and the bearded man, he slips ahead to wait at a fruit-seller's cart and waits for the man to pass by. Gellan listens to the haggling of the vendor and gets caught up in the dealing.

Zharne also follows the fleeing man but he happens to spot Gellan being delayed by a fruit so he walks up to the fruit cart and says, "are you buying rotten vegetables, Gellan?" and while Zharne is berated by the upset vendor he rubs his shoulder with his hand while having extended two fingers on the hand doing the rubbing, hinting to the halfling the direction of their prey while ignoring the vendor completely.

[sblock=Round 1 Update]
- Gloom successfully uses Insight to determine where the man will most likely be heading to. * No further Successes can be gained from Insight for this challenge. *

- Thorn successfully uses Athletics to run a parallel course one street over. He will need to make a DC 15 perception check at the beginning of the next turn if he wants to use athletics again (to keep the man in your sights).

- Jehad successfully uses Stealth to remain out of sight while trailing the man.

- Zharne succeeded in aided Gellan, and helped point out the man they were following.

- Gellan succeeded on his Perception check (thanks to Zharne) and took note of the man as he walked by.

- Minharath stays at the rear of the group, close enough to see them and paying close attention in case of danger. (no action this round)

Gellan snapped his attention away from the fruit merchant as Zharne approached, silently thanking him for the reminder of their purpose here. Keeping his eyes on the target, the halfling slipped through the crowd, using his small stature to his advantage.

When he had gotten within a few lengths of the bearded man, a curious smell sparked a memory in Gellan's mind. After the scent overloads of the curio shop and the tavern, Gellan wasn't sure he could trust his nose so quickly, but he continued to follow the man, searching his brain for the odor that clung to his clothes. It wasn't fish, it wasn't the nal'yand root, it wasn't the smoke from the tavern.......ah! That was it!

It wasn't fish, it wasn't the nal'yand root, it wasn't the smoke from the tavern.......ah! That's it!

Gellan recognized the scent of a natural moth repellent, often used by cloth merchants to ensure their shipments do not become destroyed by moths and other critters who would otherwise feast on the bolts of fabric.

Now having the recognizable scent to follow, Gellan drops further back behind the man and continues his pursuit.

Using various means the group is able to follow the man as he makes his way down the street. As you travel along you leave behind the sights and sounds of the taverns and Inns and the occasional dusk fruit merchant. This section of town is dominated by warehouses and storage buildings, with the occasional storefront doting the street. The ever-burning streetlamps become less frequent and you manage to keep a fair distance between yourselves and the man, relying on the shadows between to duck into when necessary.

As the street Thorn is following long comes to an end he is forced to cut back and join the others just in time to see the bearded man turn down an alley a couple of blocks ahead of you.

Thorn, Gloom and Zharne manage to pick up the sounds of conversation as the man begins speaking to someone, but at this distance, even with the clear quite night, cannot make out the exact words.

[sblock=Skill Challenge Update]
Congrats, you have successfully completed Skill Challenge #2 and followed the man without being noticed.

You are now about 20 squares away from the alley entrance.

What do you do now?

[sblock=Map]
OK here goes the map....

The gray line between AA and AB is a rail, below which lies the docks. There are stairs and ramps leading down at various intervals, but none here.

The Green splotches are trees. You can move under them easily enough, and at the center of the tree is the trunk, which would provide cover.

The entrance to the alley begins at U3.

Gloom approach the alley trying to not make any noise, and stop a bit farther from the corner, leaving one of his stealthy companion to actually go to the alley corner. As he does so, he tries to hear the conversation, or spot any watch the bearded man could have left behind.

[SBLOCK=OOC]Gloom move 5 squares away from the alley corner. Stealth (1d20-3=10)

He scans the area and listen to all noise and to the ocnversation: Perception (1d20+5=22)[/SBLOCK]

Thorn cuts back between the warehouses and storage buildings, joining Gloom and Zharne in the shadow cast by an ever-burning streetlamp.

Hearing the sounds of conversation 100 feet ahead, Thorn whispers to his friends in a low growl, "I can't make out anything they are saying. I would love to sneak closer, but..." He points down to his heavy, rusted armour. "I'm sure a deaf man could hear me coming."

Jehad watches the sign to move forward and moves forward quickly. However moving forward so quickly made him less stealthy. Stopping near Gloom he tries to listen to what is being said inside the alley but cant hear the slight words.

[sblock=OOC] 5 perception and 12 stealth

"Let us be quite clear on our purpose here: we are to retrieve information, and if possible, stolen property. There are to be no casualties, on eaither side."
[sblock=Map?] I cannot see the map properly. I'll try to download it, and see if that fixes it. If not, we'll have to come up with something else.[/sblock]
