I tire of the overuse of the "Red-Herring-Flashbacks-thru-Surprise-Character-Twist-Reveal" convention. If most of the character background reveals were done in a more straightforward fashion, I'd enjoy the clever ones more. As for now, it's become almost cliche. I'd hate to think that the entirety of the show is going to be based on week after week of that same formula.
I don't really think they've used that many, honestly.
Jack and Charley were both straight-forward, iirc. There really wasn't any twist to Kate's either, per se. There were some fundemental details not fully revealed, but that's not the same as a red herring...that's just a lack of information. Sun and Jin played out their biggest suprise at the front: that he was originally a humble waiter. Her ability to speak English was telegraphed from a ways off, I think. And it was clear they both understood English, even if they didn't reveal that she could speak it, as well. Charley couldn't have been more straight-forward.
So the only real 'twists' to the flashbacks were Locke's disability, and Sawyer's true identity, IMHO. There are a few secrets we're not privelege to, yet, like what Jack did to his father (I have my suspicions, as I've mentioned them before) and what Kate's crime was. But again, no red herrings that I recall. The biggest red herring about Kate was that
she was the criminal (well, the one who had been arrested, anyhow, we've got two people who clearly also apply to that title, or more depending on how you judge such things).
