LOST - 4/11/07 - One of Us (spoilers)

I found myself caring for Juliet this episode. I have always been on the fence with her, I never found her annoying, but there was just something about her that I could not shake. Then this episode I find myself sympathizing with her and taking her side. Only to have the last 5 minutes of the show turn it upside down and twist it all around.

And all I can say to that is Bravo. That is what made me like this show in the begging. Lead in one direction and suddenly turn you 180 in a heartbeat.

Loved this episode.

I feel sorry for Juliet, myself. She's a person who is in way over her head, who has ended up making choices she would never have seen herself making. Very "lost" indeed. That's the theme of the show, if you ask me. Anyway, Juliet isn't blameless... she's made some bad choices. But I think she felt that they were all choices she had to make... she knows that Ben knows where her sister lives. Juliet is essentially a prisoner just like the castaways... she really is "one of us", ironically.

Well, of course Juliette had to be a mole - if you're Ben, the ruthess leader of a secretive group who wants to keep his secrets, and if you're about to betray one of your closest associates, someone who knows a great deal about you operation, and who would be a major liability if she talked, you don't gas her and abandon her... you kill her.

For most of this episode, I had doubts as to Jack - I thought perhaps he might have gone over to the Other side. At the end of the episode my position changed. Now I have doubts about his sanity. Frankly, Sayid has the right idea about Juliette. (That said, I'm really starting to wonder why no-one has decided that they should send out a small and select exploring party. So far on the island, they've found three (?) hatches, a crashed drugs plane, a pirate ship, a village, a communications post... what else is out there? And what out of that lot can help them?

I don't believe Hurley when he said he was sent over by the rest of the castaways to keep an eye on Juliette. I think he went over himself. Because I'm still sure he's much smarter than he looks. And he's probably smart enough to realise that no-one will ever think of the genial fat guy as a threat (more fool them). In fact, he knows the Others don't, given that they let him go.

I also don't believe anything Ben says. When he told Juliette her sister's cancer was back, that would be a lie. Then, when it was convenient, they showed her the sister 'cured', and took the credit.

What I don't understand is what hold Ben still has on Juliette so she's still helping him. All I can see is that he must still have some other way off the island that he's promised her the use of. Or, at least, that he's told her she'll never get to use if she doesn't help him. (It's also entirely likely that the big electromagnet in the first hatch was responsible for keeping the island shrouded, and now it's gone there's no protection. This may explain why they've just now seen some migratory birds... and so it's possible that a rescue party will just happen by at the end of season seven, or whenever they want to wrap up the show. Or sooner... once they've revealed some big global conspiracy that Jack, Desmond and Jin have to take down.)

I just thought about this. What if Ben is still playing Juliet for a fool. What if he told her to spy, found out all she can about the group and that he and the others would return in a week. Only he is not coming back, the others have really abandoned her.

Well, the whole point of the episode was showing Juliette's main motivation: she wants off the Island more than anything (like Jack said). Who has a better chance of getting her off the island? It's certainly not the Losties. Ben has the resources, the contact with the outside world, etc. The Losties have nothing. No boat, no camp, no hatch, nothing. They've got a nice little beach. That's it. So if Juliette wants off the island, she's got a much better chance with Ben than with the Losties.

True. If they're not off the island after this long, they're not getting off the island. No-one even has a plan.

Ben has the resources, the contact with the outside world, etc.

I'm not sure he does. As written, he's just lost the sub (the one and only way off the island), and the comms centre was blown up by Locke a few weeks ago. So, unless he's got something else stashed away, Ben wouldn't appear to be that much of a better proposition than the Losties.

Of course, better the Devil you know...

caught the rerun of this tonite... and FINALLY Sayid asked the questions we've always wanted asked (why are you people on the island, why are you making lists, why are you terrorizing us)... he didn't get any answers, but still, at least someone is making the obvious comments...
