Come on. He doesn't view her as a piece of meat, he respects her for her mind.

Please. Sawyer view everyone as a piece of meat. If given the chance, he'd totally have sex with Kate (again), Claire, Sun, hell even Rose or Shannon and Nikki (when they were still alive, of course). He'd feel bad about himself if he slept with Juliet, but he'd still do it.

I think the very obvious expression of relief on his face when Kate showed up means that he probably cares about her a lot more than just that. Although yeah, if it came down to it, I don't think he's completely moved past his old habits.

Of course, maybe you were joking and I totally missed it. If that's the case, sorry! :D

Why? I dunno, why do those folks want to know more about TomZeke (who I couldn't care less about)? Just because, I guess. Interesting character, interesting drive. Maybe it's because I appreciate being driven by the knowledge that you can do something great, if only you had the right opportunity? Maybe it's because I think she's cute (though not all that cute). I can't really say, but I suspect that's true of most folks with most characters.
On Tom/Zeke, I think it is because he was not a new character and was there off and on, that is the drive to know more about him. You saw him as a right hand man to Ben and a go-between with a number of the castaways, he had impact on them.

But no viewer I know of feels compassion for Juliette

Count me in as the exception as well. . .

Then I feel sympathy for just about everyone. . . Humans are flawed and stupid (even when smart) and most importantly inconsistant.

I thought it was a great episode.

I'm back to enjoying the show.
Last year I think the wife and I were watching it out of routine, but now we're back to looking forward to new episodes.

I feel pity for Juliet's position and am amazed at Jack's blindness to her.
Ben I want dead. Not because he's an ass, but because he's irritating.
