Lost in Translation

I did buisness travel for a year and a half. My friendships at home got more distant and I could never have any contact with anyone that lasted more than a week. For me, this movie was very easy to relate to.

And Murray was robbed at the Oscars for this. Some of those scense were ad-lib. Murray may not have had many opportunites to demonstrate his range, but he did a pheonominal job with what started as an 80 page script.

In my humble opinion, natch.

What about it did you find 'artsy'? Other than the lack of plot, I mean?

And what was the opening scene? All I can recall is Scarlett Johanson in see-throught panties reclined on a bed... how can that not make sense??!

oops. i meant the artsiness of the opening scene.

i was trying to figure out if they were going for sexy or just casual or if there was a hidden meaning to someone hanging out in their underwear instead of wearing clothes.

it didn't come up anywhere else in the movie. no contrast. no meaning.

But it was Scarlett Johanson in see through....

Seriously, I thought the scene was there to set up audience expectations; about that young languid, half-dressed woman as some unobtainable object of desire ["So its that kind of film..."] which the rest of the film plays around with, both supporting and defeating those expectations.

My totally piggish thought exactly.

I really enjoyed the movie: it was more about capturing a specific type of alienation than about the plot. Even the characters and setting were subservient to establishing the atmosphere, I think, and that was done beautifully.

Speaking of beautiful, the cinematography was great, zipping from insanely frenetic colorful television shows to someone golfing with Mt Fuji (?) in the background.

And I loved the humor -- few things recently have made me snicker as much as Bill Murray's expressions when he's doing Lat Pack for the whiskey ads.

I watched the movie for the first time last night. It was an ok movie IMO, being neither good or bad on an overall level. I enjoyed the some of the scenes and thought some others were a tad uncomfortable (as in watching them). My only criticism of the film is that a few of the scenes were too long for me (and I suspect that is truly biased on my part).

I also found that I had a difficult time connecting emotionally with the characters. Ironic, eh? :)

My girlfriend and I went to see it because of the good reviews. We were bored stiff. Nothing happens.

Man, that was a couple of hours I want back.

This is exactly how I felt. Bored, very bored. I thougt both of the characters seemed bored and uninteresting whcih is what left me bored. Unlike Russ though I only need 45 minutes back cause I walked away.

People have different tastes. This movie was very subdued, like trying to get back to feeling normal after jet lag. It certainly helps that the movie's in Japan, which is inherently one of the funniest locations in the world.

It's not intense. It's subtle, and at times you're as uncomfortable as the characters are. But there are moments of pure joy and simple fun. It's a movie about real life, made exotic by its setting.

I personally loved it.

This is exactly how I felt about the movie. It was filled with subtlety. It was not something i will probably ever watch again, but I did enjoy it.

The opening scean was very intimate. It gave me a feeling of familiarity with the character.
I liked it alot.

The cast was good, but the script just went nowhere. Wanted to like it, and did (not enough to ever bother watching it again), but I did not enjoy it as much as I would have if more things had happened (like Bill and the girl cheating). The movie was too long for having so little happen. Wish Bill had gotten his Academy Award for Best Actor, though. He was really good in it.
