"Lost" movie in the works

Although this wouldn't be the ideal way to finish the series, I can understand the marketing idea behind it. It would certainly be a cash cow, and I'd pay to see it.

I'm going to chalk this one up to rumor started by the not always reliable british tabloids.

Exactly, though, there have been some inkling rumors among some of my broadcasting professors that If ABC moves to cancel Lost, that Fox might grab it to package it with 24.

Actors are actors. It's not like some of us take special How-to-act-in-a-movie workshops.
The thing is that tv-shows generally get filmed on a day per episode basis. That means that the actors and crew have one shot at getting it right. Very rarely do they have multiple takes. With a movie you can assume that (provided you have the budget) a scene is done again and again until it's "right", giving the actors time to work out the kinks and see what works and what doesn't.

I do agree with you that nigh everytime you "port" from one form of media (Game to Movie, Movie to game, Tv-series to movie etc.) the second form sucks.

Which would be smart. I don't see my Lost Jones being sated by two seasons and a movie.

Hmmmm.

It's a little late for an April Fools joke. Actually, this story reeks of something out of a Hollywood tabloid. The story is 3 days old and none of the big sites (AICN, EW, IGN, etc) have paid it any mind which is telling to me. If there was any truth to it, the rumor mill would be going nuts right about now, especially considering the premiere is very close and the show is plastered everywhere.

The crux of the story being that the actors are miffed about their salaries doesn't add up, either. The show is so popular that all of leads are getting tons of exposure which means they'll be able to get other work (movies, commercials, endorsement deals).

And a $1000 car that gets 1000 miles to the gallon would be better than the Saturn I bought. But no such car exists...

Seriously, reality programs, for the most part, actually get pretty low ratings... but as you mention, they are so cheap to produce that even with low ratings, they can make a profit on modest advertising fees. Also note that most reality shows are usually less than a full season of a regular series, either being mid-season replacements or alternatives to summer re-runs.

Does ABC have a sure-fire reality series that can fill in Lost's shoes for a full season (or more?) Most likely not. And as the saying goes, a bird in the hand...

Also, there seems to be a lot of backlash against reality TV (always a misnomer in my book) these days, especially on the major networks... people want to see something different, and shows like Lost and Desperate Housewives have shown that there are still interesting characters and innovative stories out there to be told (that don't involve hidden cameras, midgets or injesting earthworms with pig eye garnishes.)

On the topic at hand, the article sounds like a load of hooey to me.

Except that they're smart enough to know that monster hits get people to watch all of your shows more, and that you get to advertise to them about your other shows while they're watching your hits.

The Friends characters were getting paid $1,000,000 EACH PER EPISODE. Do you think NBC agreed to that truly outrageous amount even though a reality show that costs 1/20 might, maybe, possibly be able to fill that slot and make them more money? NBC never, ever wanted it to end.

Hawaii is nothing. Lost + Depsperate Housewives brought ABC out of the dumpster. They'd be idiots to cancel Lost because the percentage ROI, at least at this stage. If they got to the Friends stage, then sure.
