Lost our first 3E character last sunday...

Mithriltooth

First Post
One of my players lost his character while trying to provide cover for the party's retreat. She was killed by a particularly powerfull Smite Good attack by a Fiendish Red Wyrmling (see Dungeon Of The Fire Opal- Dungeon #84).

Rest-In-Peace Lucinda Frostmourne, you would have made a fine Harper.
(Moon Elven Female Ftr3 on her way to becoming a Harper Scout as per the FRHC). :(

How long have you been playing 3E?

I've seen well over a dozen PCs go down since I started around when 3E came out. Possibly as many as two dozen.

Only one of those under my watch as DM though. I've found myself to be too eay of a DM, easier than I would like...

We played a campaign for 8 months and had 4 deaths total. The first death (ever!) for these guys was the biggest shock of their lives. I called out the damage done and they sat there doing the math as many ways as they could to come up with something other than -20. Everybody was silent for a moment, and then combat slowly carried on, then with renewed vigor at the offending barbarian ogre.

The next 3 weren't so dramatic, as they were entirely due to stupidity. :)

edited for poor spelling.

We lose one every three sessions on the average. Don't ask.
In the new campaign we've lost about one every other session if you total all the sessions, though it hasn't been all in a smooth order.

Everyone of them run by the same player though.

I think we're somewhere on session 8 or 10 or so.

Im a kinder hearted DM and most of my current players have been gaming with me for 10+ years and have learned to be wary. I wont make it too easy on them though. They are just excellent players and I'm probably one of the happier DMs out there with players like the ones in my group.

lol BUT, Im allowing him to return with a newer elf. He will be coming back with Gwenect Moondark a Drow female that we rescued in "The Raiders Of Galath's Roost" (see Dungeon #87). It will be interesting tomorrow to say the least due to the fact that the initial party encounter with Gwenect was.... interesting.
For those that have played that adventure, Ive altered her story that she is a defector and the 2 Drow males searching for her are NOT trying to rescue her, but to return her forcibly, even dead to their clan. Possible future plotline.

Being that she has a level adjustment of +2, she was perfect as a 3rd level charcater (Ranger Level 1). He's rerolled her stats and picked her skills, feats etc. He even likes her name.

We have had many deaths in our game, too. Most have been the character of one player, who just seems to be unlucky. :D

He is on his 4th character. Rand Athor (original, huh?) was a wizard/rogue that got clubbed to death by a druid. Kraus was an irrascible barbarian that fell off a rope bridge battling orcs. Amon of the Rovers was a barbarian who fell into undeath by the hand of shadows. His current character will be a barbarian/fighter. I wonder how he will bite it? :D

The paladin died fighting a black dragon. We had two near TPKs where all but one character died. They were raised in those cases.

In the campaing I´m DMing, I´ve just killed two characters (out of a total of three) One of them get resurrected, althoug he had to accept a Atonement spell and become LN (if you´re a rogue don´t die near a temple of Cuthbert)

I think it´s time to tone down the battles, give less XP and let the players learn what they can do with the characters.
