D&D 4E Lost S04E01 Jan 31 2008

The 10 first minutes of this episode was better that the whole lackluster season of Heroes. I can´t explain how happy I´m that Lost is back. That was really great.

Well, since it isn't divided by the split on the island, it could be anyone. For the story to progress in an exciting manner, I think it needs to be people clever enough, or driven enough, to get them back to the island by the end of the season. I vote for Locke (who wants to be on the island), Sawyer (who might want to help Kate go back if she asked him), and Desmond (who might be able to see they need to be on the island).

Can we really count Desmond as on the 6 since he was not on the fight?

I got the impression that there was something dodgy about the Oceanic 6.... it seems implied that the 6 got away and told everyone that they were the only survivors of the plane crash and that there was nobody else there.....

That was my impression, at least to an extent. From Jack and Hurley's exchange, what I got out of it was that Hurley is the only one who knows where the other survivors are, but that Jack knows that there are others. And the Mysterious Black Guy (Dharma rep? Someone else?) suspects it, but doesn't know for sure.

Also, the conversation with Charlie's Ghost (Jacob?), pretty much confirms that there are still people left on the island. He flat out says that they need Hurley's help.

Nope. I hadn't considered that. I think you are right. I suppose I need to choose a different sixth for my lot.

Kate, Hurley, Jack, plus . . . well, the ones I like best are Ben, Sayid, Sawyer, Jin, and Desmond. We can't have Ben or Desmond as part of the 6, and Sawyer being with Kate is too obvious I think, so I'm saying Sayid and Jin. And the final one has to be Sun, because only Claire gets to have the miracle birth.

Though with my luck it'll be Kate, Jack, Hurley . . . plus Aaron, Vincent, and that old guy back in season 1 who had hives and wanted to play golf.

Moving on from the O6...

We know that, unlike Dave, Charlie has to be at least somewhat real, as one of the other mental patients saw him. As an aside, it was great that they didn't spoil this in the previews... I totally didn't expect it. For the whole time I expected it to be Dharma folks.

I like how Jack wasn't paying attention to the chase, until they mentioned the car model, and he got a perfect "oh crap" look on his face. Also, Jack pulling the trigger - awesome.

I love Mira Furlan. She needs to be a regular.

My favorite part of the episode though is that it's neither Jack nor John that people follow - it's Hurley. Hurley is the most charismatic person in the group, and this episode really capitalized on it. Everyone that goes with Locke goes because of Hurley. Like Rose said, if they didn't go with Locke, it's not because of Hurley... it's because Locke is a nutjob. What I found amusing is that most of the characters I would associate with a high Wisdom - Sayid, Rose, Sun - stay with Jack.

That said, I really don't get how they can justify Locke anymore, especially with regards to other people listening to him. While Jack has clearly gone off-kilter as well... I don't think that many people would be upset if he actually killed Locke.

My personal (crazy) theory about Charlie... I think that the "monster" is an interface to talk to the dead. Hence Charlie's line about being "dead, but here." All of the other instances we know of the "monster" manifesting have been of dead people - Eko's brother, for example. As to how it can manifest outside of the island, I'm not really sure.

I have a similar theory, though with differences. I think that the "monster" is either Jacob, or that Jacob was the first dead person the monster mimicked, and that basically what the monster does is somehow read minds or otherwise "pull" the concept of a dead person from a living person who knew them. The monster uses this information to interface with the person, and it selects dead people instead of the living in order to prevent duplication in any given situation -- maybe it mimicked a living person early-on and failed in communicating because the original came on the scene.

Or, y'know, something like that. :D

Except, it has mimicked Walt, at least twice. (Once to Shannon in season 2 and then to Locke in season 3) Unless you write those off as individual hallucinations, which is not consistent. Or as Walt 'projecting' himself, which is theoreticaly possible but doesn't seem accurate.
