Point me to a show that doesn't do that, though- it's standard practice nowadays. Heck, they even do it on previews for Judge Judy, where they make it seem like one person is getting harangued by the judge, only to have the actual show turn out quite a bit different.

It may be deceiving, but it's pretty much current MO for every show that has previews.

Doesn't make it right. And not every show does this. Bones nad House on Fox give straight forward previews. I'm sure there are others.

You know, I have nothing against being selective in what they show in next week's previews to build suspense, but this thing they do with the Lost previews is just completely absurd.

I'm referring to their repeated tendency (actually, they do it for Invasion as well, so I guess it's more of a network thing) to put together preview scenes out of order and out of context, that makes it look like what's going to happen is completely different from what in fact does happen... Which is sort of redundant, and doubly irritating, on a show like Lost.

I'm surprised anyone would be shocked at this. It's pretty common in the TV industry....I remember in Survivor: Outback they had a commercial that made it look like one of the characters got bitten by a croc.......but when the episode aired, it turned out someone blacked out from the smoke, and fell face-first onto their campfire.

Not that I want either event to happen to anyone, but it was still deceptive.

Maybe some people just don't notice it anymore because it's so prevalent.

I just have issues with previews anyway they go, they can give away something or they can red herring you but I have to say the red herring way seems to be more common these days.

Hmm... Perhaps it's because, aside from the occasional Simpsons, I just haven't watched network TV for years (literally) - and only got back to it recently after getting a DVR. But even looking at the small cross-section of shows I have watched lately, there are degrees of it, and Lost seems to be easily the worst offender.
