Rap History Lesson

The Gollum beat-boxing part is actually a sample of the "Gremlin" beat-boxing styles of U.T.FO. (famous for that king-sized cut from back in the day, "Roxanne, Roxanne") from their song, "Bite It."

You make me proud, nem. :D Thanks for the trip down memory lane...

I first became a big hip-hop freak in high school (1982-86) and actually got to see UTFO, The Real Roxanne, Whodini and Whistle in concert together at Winston-Salem State University back in the day. About the same time I saw RUN-DMC at the Greensboro Coliseum on the opening night of their "Raising Hell" tour, supported by LL Cool J, Whodini (again) and The Timex Social Club. At the last minute Timex dropped out and were replaced by an unknown trio of white rappers - The Beastie Boys. Both of those shows were some of the best I've ever seen. I've been a hip-hop fan and a major Beasties fan ever since. Course I was also the President of the Gamer's Club and in ROTC in high school, too (needless to say, I didn't get laid until I was in college). Just in case you didn't know, there's an uncredited UTFO sample on the Beasties' Hello Nasty - "Explain to me really what doctors must do..."

Thanks also to shurai for the link. GREAT site that became an instant bookmark.

"Mixmaster Ice, to be precise, the boy is nice. Cuz he can cut butter, cut a record, cut a girl in two and all you wack MCs, he'll cut the mess outta you."

I listened to that song for about a week straight before Two Towers came out...it's pretty funny, but I don't think the video was that well done. They looked too much like pathetic nerds. :) I definitely need to get one of those mushroom clocks.

I like this press release though:

02.06.2003|

For Immediate Release

LORDS OF THE RHYMES WIN ESQUIRE MAGAZINE'S 'LEAST LIKELY TO GET LAID' AWARD.

Hobbit Rappers take the opportunity to dispel certain myths about the sex life of Tolkien fans.

http://www.lordsoftherhymes.com

Quickbeam and Bombadil, Middle-Earth's foremost Hobbit rappers, were listed in Esquire Magazine's 'culture awards' this month. (March 2003, pg. 64) The magazine pronounced the diminutive duo "Least likely to get laid."

" We'd like to thank the obviously well-sexed staff writers at Esquire and their equally virile readership for recognizing the valuable contribution that hobbit rap has made to our society," said rapper Quickbeam in a statement issued today from his sprawling crib in the Southfarthing.

" But we'd also like to address what we see as a disturbing media trend. This whole 'Tolkien fans never get laid' :):):):) is just tired."

Since the release of the 'Fellowship of the Ring' in December 2001, the sex life of Tolkien fans has been the brunt of jokes on late night talk shows and comedy shows, and in newspapers and magazines. Psychologists have attributed the phenomena to a type of reverse envy, in which formerly popular underachievers feel threatened when the nerds they teased in high school
end up having more satisfying sex lives than their own.

" It's understandable that the writers at Esquire are threatened by our virility," Quickbeam went on. "I mean, we are some mackin' hobbits."

" S'right," added Bomabadil "And who wants to be outshagged by a midget?" Further details of the Lords' sexual exploits will be illuminated in their upcoming song: " Back that elf up," which features the lyric: 'My fly elf girl's got pointy little ears/
I been rockin' that bottom for five thousand years...'

New song has been posted on the site: "Nine Fingered Frodo"

Amazingly enough, they're also playing a live gig in NYC. If anyone on the board goes to that one, please post and let us know what it was like.

Yo yo!

Now I have to see if I can keep June 3 free. I wouldn't want to miss this!

Hehe, I think I'll e-mail the band. They're probably gamers, and might want somebody joining their group! ;)
