I think it’s @darjr but I don’t believe it’s too simple.

Seems to be happening everywhere and to different forum systems. But I’m a social worker not a tech guy [shrug] :)

If I look at the HTML for this page, there are a few clues that tell me this board runs on a framework called XenForo. Have a look at the XenForo documentation on the topic! Sucked all the tech out of it for you :) Maybe some/most/all of these have been done and this Love Spells spam bot is wily enough to penetrate these defenses :)

Anyway, this thread was just a kneejerk reaction to a herd of amusingly worded spam threads that invaded the board. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some cookies to remove from the oven...

If you’ve somehow become the person to finally find the solution to the world’s spam problems, I salute you! And can I have some of the vast fortune you’re about to make? :)

Of course, we have up to date spam filters and human verification tools. Spammers are always one step ahead, and the spam filters are always playing catch-up.

On days where the spam is bad - I just assume the staff will get rid of them eventually. If I want to avoid having to filter through all the spam, I just take a minute and ignore those posters and that filters out all the spam threads. But I've only ever needed to do that once.

This is a vulnerable time of year for many folks. It wouldn't surprise me if that was part of the spammer arsenal... save your wiliest gambits to penetrate your targets at this time of year.

I always assumed the love spell crap was because there’s lots of content about magic spells on these forums. The spambots think this is a target-rich environment.

Not sure who manages the technical aspects of this board, but there are simple mechanisms for blocking these sorts of posts that seem to hit this board frequently for some reason.

Ask yourself the following question...

What's more likely:

1) Those mechanisms are already in place, and what you see is the tiny fraction of the spam that gets through, or

2) After 20+ years of running a board, Morrus would still be running them without the basic mechanisms for keeping spam at bay that come with the software package, and YOU are just the nerd to educate him?
