Loving The Game, Hating The Setting - Advice Needed!

First Post
I'm currently involved in a Champions game with my local group.
I think the GM is great, but the campaign setting annoys the beejeezus out of me.

I'll start at the beginning. One fellow we know started a Champions campaign with his homebrewed superhero world. He treated his sessions more as "playtesting" his world rather than real roleplaying experiences, and it bothered me so I quit going.

Another one of my friends is an industry professional and a -fantastic- game master... I'll play in any game he runs.

Recently my friend picked up the reins of the other guy's campaign setting and starting running games. I joined in and, for the most part, I am enjoying myself.

The problem is... I really don't like the setting. It isn't my friend's fault... he just picked up where the other guy left off more for ease of play (less time spent making new characters, for example) than for any other reason.

I try to find any excuse I can to roleplay outside of the superfriends-like hero-base. I look for opportunities to create something else with my own character's story that's independent of the setting-specific NPC's and metaplots.

What else can I really do to make this game more fun for me? I don't want to quit... my friend's GMing skills can make almost any game fun. I just wish I didn't feel so ambivalent (or antagonistic) towards the darn setting. There are about five other players, and they seem to be fine with whatever's going on, so I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority... but I wouldn't be posting here if I didn't feel strongly about my misgivings. Any advice or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

I'd just get together with everyone else and work something out. If it's bland, make up something new. Look at the Marvel Universe back in the 60s. That technically started with 1 superhero (Cap, and he was on ice) and yet everyone had villains to fight all day and into the night. Throw in an alien invasion and boom!

Collaborative effort is very good for pleasing everyone, though. I still need to work step pyramids into my campaign...
