Vermin Lord, from the Book of Vile Darkness? Half caster, unfortunately. I'll see if I can think of other PrCs that might suit as well.

Oh, and I didn't see this one: Druid with 'Child of Winter' from the Eberron Campaign Setting book? Seems an obvious choice. Sorry if I did miss that one.

Nothing wrong with Half-casters, really...especially if he's to be the sole casting BBEG in a low level challenge.

In addition, as I recall, some articles or supplements have suggested using vermin or swarms as animal companions or familiars. That could work very well here.

Sadly, I don't think a party of 2nd lvl character's could handle any Derro build that include PrC's.. half-caster or otherwise!

Your basic Derro is CR 3, so one or two base class levels might be ok, but I'm a little wary of even that since they will probably be softened up by both his "pets" and perhaps a trap or two he's set up.

Still, his base class (and even feats and skills) are open to debate. I'm loathe to just use the MM Derro verbatim for this encounter. I am trying to make it memorable.
