Low magic/gritty classes

I'm not looking for any specific TTRPG, I'm just wondering in your opinions what type of classes do you think work well in a dark fantasy/gritty/low magic campaign?

What sort of media would be a good example of the type of tone you're looking for?

Glenn Cook Black Company, Game of Thrones, Dracula,Occultic themes, The movie Black Death or Season of the Witch(Nic Cage).

Warriors, scoundrels, street mages (not blasters), investigators.

Think pulp and noir mixed with Conan.

Hmm. I'd probably go super low-magic for that one; assuming something vaguely D&D-like.

Fighter, Rogue, Barbarian from standard 5e.
Ben Huffman's Pugilist class for a gritter monk replacement. Pugilist
Laserllama's Savant and Warlord to flesh out some martial-types with mental skills. Savant Warlord
And if you wanted some more occult style magic, I'd look at Mage Hand Press' Investigator.
