Loyalty among gamers, does it exist?

Gaming is just a hobby and SHOULD be low on the priority totem pole. Also, it kinda disturbs me how long some gamers expect others to commit to a game with no advance warning of how long it would run for. If one is playing a game and after three sessions it is apparent the campaign arc isn't even a quarter done, it would have been nice to know it had been planned for a 12+ week commitment sooner.

Roleplaying games are slightly different than other subjects but they are still games.

If you're playing with friends and hate the game, the setting, or some of the other players there and a chance comes along to play in a game without those elements that are ruining your personal fun because you want to hang out with your friends... go see a movie with them or dinner or sports.

Friends =! gaming together.

Loyalty to your friends doesn't mean playing in games you don't enjoy, from either side of the screen.

I agree with this...to a point.

We as a group prefer 3.X, but the newest guy is running a very good 4Ed game while the guy running the most popular 3.X game is taking a break from DMing...and only some in the group are playing (including the 3.X DM).

What I've been trying to get the no-shows to realize is that the 3.X DM won't return to the other side of the screen until he's "recharged his batteries," and that one of the best ways to help that process along is to help him have a positive gaming experience as a player.

IOW, not playing 4Ed isn't going to get us back to the 3.X game any faster.

Then those players have to decide whether or not playing in the 4e game is a worthwhile "price of admission" for getting the 3.X game back (faster or at all). If they don't think so, no friend would pressure them to make it so.

A case in point was the discussion we had here some months back, about they guy who was not allowed to play DnD in prison. In that discussion, some "faction loyalty" was displayed, a bit of outrage was heard, but I don't recall anyone starting a fund for the guy.

A fund for what?

I didn't read that thread, but AFAIK the courts have held that the prisons are free to say "No D&D for you!" while you're in prison. I'm not sure what good a fund would do here.

OTOH, no friend should be pressuring a buddy to cut short his well-earned R&R with passive-aggressive BS like saying they'll show up and not doing so. Several times.

In addition, there is a time for a friend to take one for the team.

Personally, all I'm doing is making them aware this may be one of those times. Relatively speaking, but for the 4Ed DM, I'm the new guy. I've known the 3.X guy just over a decade...but they knew him in HS and college.

A fund as a show of support for a fellow gamer. I wasn't really thinking money, just any kind of substantial support. The topic is inter-gamer loyalty, and this response seems to indicate there's not much of that.

I'll not get into my views on US prisons. Don't want to get political.

I've got some loyalty. I dragged Drowbane kicking and screaming into my 4E group. He's been with us for over six months now, and he's still kicking and screaming.
