Disadvantages - if they appear in play during a game, you gain bonus XP for a CR equal to the 'level' of the disadvantage.

Sounds like Chuck revisited the rules for Vigilance... one of the only takes on disads in d20 I find palatable.

I do have some questions for Louis or other fans of Haven: City of Violence, if you don't mind me asking here.

1. Is there any FX in this setting - magic, psionic/psychic abilities?
2. Any element of the supernatural, like the undead?
3. Are the other d20 Modern Advanced classes published by Devil's Workshop considered to be core classes for the Haven: City of Violence setting?

Thanks!

1. No. When we planned to do Haven: COV we planned it without any of that. But we also planned to do a suppliment when you could have FX in the setting. This was called Haven: Shadowline. With Haven: COV movering over to D20 Moedern this sourcebook may be more of a possibility.
2. See Question 1.
3. They can be used in Haven. Some of them fit better in Haven: COV then others. Urban Saint, The Wronged and Gun Priest are perfect foe Haven: COV while Sorcerer Supreme is completely wrong for the setting.

I just want to say...

Can I get a map?

Sorry about that. I forgot to add it to the PDF. Het me see about getting one up at my website. When I do I will have a link here.

There's no map provided to position this fictional city in the greater scheme of things, so I'm guessing it's supposed to just drop into a real world map?

Yes.

Problems arise from this, if you'll excuse the quote from pages 8 & 9:
"Haven is one of the most populous cities in the eastern seaboard of the United States. In addition to Haven’s large population, it also boasts the third largest seaport in the nation. Haven resides directly on the eastern coast of the United States next to the Atlantic Ocean, roughly 45 miles north of the city of Baltimore."

Roughly 45 miles north of Baltimore puts you between York and Harrisburg in PA, which is nearly 100 miles west of the Atlantic shoreline.

Or does it mean the point on the Atlantic seaboard occupied by haven is roughly 45 miles north of Baltimore's latitude? If so, that just about drops Haven on top of the existing real world city of Tom's River, NJ. Admittedly, Tom's River is abnormally crime-prone for a town its size, but it is hardly inspiration for the likes of Haven...

Actually it land somewhere in Delaware.

If Haven really is supposed to be on the Atlantic shores and is actually supposed to be 45 miles north of Baltimore, then where's the backstory to explain what happened to the thousands of square miles of land that used to be east of it?

This city is one that can be dropped into any setting but we use "real" location is player or GM need to know how long it will take to trave from Haven to any major US city or abroad.

Another troublesome issue for me is the city's size. 760 square miles in size is a square just over 27.5 miles to a side. Is it really supposed to be that large? It is titanic compared to other northeastern port cities; Philadelphia measures 136 sq miles, Boston is 48 sq miles, Baltimore is 81 sq miles, and NYC is 321 sq miles. Also, Haven's population density is 7,105 people per square mile (5.4 million in 760 sq. m.), compared to NYC's 25,234 people per square mile (8.1 million in 321 sq. m.). Even Philadelphia is more dense at 15,441 people per sq. m. (2.1 million in 136 sq. m.). Statistically, the population density is too pleasant for a place being called "city of violence".

Actually I used New York City as the basis of the size of the city. In the areas of Arcadia, Armistad and Haven City the popularity is more dense then in Golden Heights for example. I must admit you are the first person to ever say that their should be more people to make this city more dangerous.
:)

Well I ended up buying this last night, and it seems pretty good for the $8 so far. A few minor nitpicks (lack of index, page #s a lil hard to read), but overall it seems like a very useful product for myself at a first read.

We definitely need a map, and as I am super anal I will end up emailing LPJ a small list of quirks.

BTW just so people know, although my name is similar lpj designs, I have absolutely nothing to do with Louis. Chuck however, I do badger frequently online, but I didn't know he was involved in this project.

After a tentative read, two thumbs up from me. I've been waiting for d20modern mini-settings for ages, and I am very excited about this.

Cheers

Here's an easy question tho I think I already have the answer.

Can Haven support the antics of 4 radioactive prepubescent terrapins with kung fu abilities named after Renaissance artists and their rodent mentor along with their "sounds like an appliance" nemesis and his legions of Spider Man clone henchmen?

Louis, Vig:

From the ads and promo text of the older Haven, and from comments made here, the city seems a bit darker and dangerous than your average city. Would this tend to work well in a Tarrantino influenced game?

If so, would it work well with an Anime Vs. Tarrantino style of game? I plan on having somewhat gratuitous violence, mixed with the fact that there are magical girls and the occasional pink rabbit familliar of them. Of course, it's the magical girls that will be the target of all this gratuitous violence... :P

Ok, so I expected a reply really quick and didn't get one...

So I went out and purchased Haven d20 Modern for myself this afternoon. I haven't been able to digest all of it, but I'll post my quick observations here and hopefully will do a full RPGNow and/or enworld review when I finally get through it.

1) This book is a monster, coming it at 94 pages. I knew it was going to be big when it took me 30 minutes to download it. (I have a 28.8 modem connection, and the Zip file is over 6 MB).

2) As with #1, this thing is huge and is PACKED with content. The first 9 pages or so is a bit of a story (similar to the stories in the B&F series if you have those). It's a good read and a good addition to the book. Then 36 some pages of setting for the city of Haven. That is what is going to take forever to finally digest. And I will second another poster when I say that we definately need a map of this city. It's huge, and I just cant get my mind to grasp where stuff is in relation to other parts of town.

3) As with #2 and #1, there's a few AdC's and plenty of feats. This is not Louis's normal style of 1 class per product, but you get about 4 (plus if you interchange the brains and brawns talent tree selections you can make probably 20 ore more different classes based on how you choose your talents). There's also a ton of talents to be chosen based on what organization you are affiliated with (crime families). I assume you can take them any time you can take another base talent, the text didn't seem to say (maybe Vig or Louis could point that out when they come in). Loads of crunch!!!

4) I may not be reading the OGL sec 15 right, but it seems there's a lot of closed content. I know about half the book is city fluff, but I expected there to be more open content. Not really a big deal, I just like to see stuff open.

5) No page numbers or Index/TOC at the beginning. That makes navigation pretty difficult, but isn't so bad...until you see #6. EDIT: There ARE page numbers, but they are written vertically white on grey sidebar. I never noticed them, and when I did, even reading them was pretty difficult due to them being written sideways with an odd font. So this entry is really only 'partially' a negative. Still could use a TOC, but I'd much rather have the bookmarks.

6) No bookmarks. No bookmarks, no index, no page numbers, no navigation. I'm hoping that this is a quick fix and Louis will update the current file with at least some bookmarks so navigation is quicker.

And just to prove the point, I did a search for one of the sections of Haven (Armistad) and the actual beginning of the Armistad description section was #19 in the search links. Took forever to find. A good quick bookmark to things like that would have brought me there in 10 seconds.

Now, that being said...the bad stuff really isn't all that bad at all. In fact, overall the book is pretty darn spiffy and I really like what I bought. I would like some navigation though, it's the only thing keeping this from a 4.5 or 5 right now...

Heya jez, thanks for the (mini) review :)

On your first post, I think Haven would definitely be suitable for a Tarantino type game. Add in Blood and Fists: Hong Kong Knights and you could do Kill Bill pretty nicely ;)

On your second post, question #3, my intention with the organization talents is that they would work with the Organization Brains and Muscle classes. When you pick the alternating talents and feats from those classes they would come from the organization talents.

My suspicion is that the organization talents would be a little unbalancing if you could take them earlier with base class talents, but I never playtested it to see, so that is just a gut reaction.

Id say yes, especially the comics (which were a little darker than some of the cartoon incarnations of the series).

Hey Vig, thanks for the clarification. It looked like the classes had 'base' trees of their own as well, and with these trees in a different spot it was kind of confusing...but that could be because I haven't gotten to read all thru it in detail yet.

If you guys ever revise it (hopefully with page numbers and bookmarks), you may want to append a little statement above the org talents to mention that they reference back to classes a few pages back.

Still, a good read thus far. Aside from the Mob wars, Haven really isn't as 'dark and gloomy' as I expected. Punisher would have a field day blasting these guys, but I haven't yet got a feel that it's the Batman style of doom and gloom...I will keep everyone updated as I read more.

And as Vig knows from chatting, I always have a TON of questions....guess my reading comprehension skills have dropped since I was a youngster. :P
