[M&M2e] Red Sands Chronicles

Brian Shaughnessy

Brian halts in place as he sees movement and catches Deezy's confirmation. He realizes that the metal beast is having something of the opposite effect as whoever is out there is keeping clear of it, which means their spotting of Brian and the Ottoman might not lead to hesitation.

"I think we're not nearly as sneaky as we wanted to be," he whispers to the Ottoman. "Either it's time for that fog, or I say we catch up to the metal beastie, since who or whatever these are don't like it."

The sound of the revolver being cocked could be heard as Seif reached his camel. After a short pause, Seif can hear the gun decock followed by a muttered curse.

Seif Knowledge: Desert 1d20+10=19

[sblock=Knowledge]
In the past you heard stories about what some people call a Wasteland Ghost, which often are at the center of precautionary tales about wandering away from camp alone, without an escort, or without protection. In these stories they are described as being feral subhuman monstrosities which roam the wastelands in small packs.

According to many legends, these "ghosts" are only visible when viewed from the edges of one's vision.

Sahid narrows his eyes. "That shimmering in the distance, it appears to be some sort of illusion..." the Ottoman says almost to himself. At Brians suggestion, he adds "True, if we have already been spotted, we should probably hide ourselves." and he conjures the fog of steam over the party. "We now rely on the Beast's heat sensors. " he comments.

By that time he is mounted, reins in hand... But still he turned back to look at her over his shoulder, veil now back in place... "Water?"

Seif’s gut clenched tight on Deezy's last comment, one thought foremost in his mind: mutants! But too late now: he is already airborne, hanging upside down in the middle of his flip, as a matter of fact, looking right down the enemy’s gullet...

...which isn't there at all.

The robed man landed in a squat at the corner of two high walls, sword raised high, head slowing swivelling across the deserted scene...

[sblock=Actions]Seif tries to catch sight of - anything - from the corner of his eyes. If he does, try to gain an idea of what, where and how many without looking directly at them.[/sblock]

"I'll survive."

Sahid raises a blanket of fog as Seif leaps onto a wall.

....but much hairier.... and more mutant-y ;)

There are four to the front and four to the rear. Each enemy group is 30 feet from the group.

OOC: Does Brian's infravision allow him to see them directly, or was that 'out of the corner of the eye' as well?

"And now that things are nice and humid, should be a bit easier to trip these folks up..." Brian mutters, not bothering to clarify for the Ottoman what he means. There does, however, seem to be a chill in the air...

Ice Slick (DC 16 trip) under the group of critters closest to Brian and the Ottoman, then Brian'll do his best to conceal himself.

The Ottoman dances, rising his shield of water, and hoping into the air, to land near one of these critters, and slashing at it with his steam powered scimitar. The wicked weapon rends the creature's flesh, and as soon as he lands and attacks, the Ottoman tries to banish amongst the mist.

"I'll survive."

Seif slowly nodded respect, then nudged his cyborg mount into a run. He did not look back again.

"Wasteland ghosts!" He shouted to Deezy. "Fire on my direction!" Both his swords extended out to their full length and slashed huge furrows in the crumbling massonry above the creatures, showering them with small debris and gritty dust, clearly outlining their awful, snarling forms for further targetting.

[sblock=Actions]Seif is trying to negate the concealement bonus of the group of 4 he and Deezy are facing; he's prepared to spend a Hero point to do this if need be. Alternatively, this could be interpreted as a +5 Aid Another to Deezy's advantage (1d20+6=22). Your call, Relique.[/sblock]

"I see 'em," Deezy answered as she shifted the Beast into a slower gait and twisted its torso to track the four heat signatures as she brought the mecha around to the side to try to catch more than one in the danger zone of the weapon system she was activating.

On the midsection of the Beast, a boxy structure mounted slightly right of center emitted a whining noise and split open, revealing double rows of four barrels underneath the plating. Safeties clunked heavily off, and the Beast stopped moving.

Then each barrel began firing with a surprisingly low-key, hollow phud noise. Thick cylindrical projectiles arced out towards the mutants...then began to explode in midair, showering the area in front of the Beast with a devastating hail of fragments and submunitions!

(Pepperbox anti-infantry gun! It's a Cluster Area Effect, 10' wide and 40' long, and she moves to try to catch at least two contacts in that area if she possibly can. Base DC is 19 per target, increases by +2 against a specific target if the attack roll exceeds the Defense of a target by 5 or more. With Cluster attacks, I roll one to-hit, and it's compared to the Defense of anything in the area to determine effects. They don't get a Reflex save to reduce damage.)

OOC: Does Brian's infravision allow him to see them directly, or was that 'out of the corner of the eye' as well?
OOC: You are able to make out a lot of their bodily detail (due to heat variances) as well as location/positioning, but while their concealment is up, you could not make out the color of their skin, eyes, and hair/fur unless they are on the edge of your vision, or unless they drop their concealment which is likely since it's a concentration duration.

Brian creates an ice slik underneath the closest pack of "Wasteland Ghosts...."
WG 5 Dex 11 vs 24 --> Tripped
WG 6 Dex 17 vs 24 -->Tripped
WG 7 Dex 9 vs 24 --> Tripped
WG 8 Dex 11 vs 24 --> Tripped

.... causing the "Wasteland Ghosts" to fall to the ground. As they hit, their concealment drops.

Sahid slashes at one of the Desert ghosts....
Sahid attack: 19 vs 16 -> Hit
WG Tough: 22 vs 21 --> No Damaged
WG 5 Fort21 vs 16 --> No Effect.

..and hits, but doesn't seem to cause any damage to the creature. The Ottoman then flees into the mists.

"Fire on my direction!" Seif aids Deezy in spotting the Wasteland Ghosts by kicking dust and debri onto them...
OOC: No need to spend a hero point.
WG 1: 12 --> Concealed
WG 2: 8 --> Partially Concealed
WG 3:16 --> Concealed
WG 4:8 --> Partially Concealed

"I see 'em," Deezy launches a barrage of shot at the Wasteland Ghosts...
Deezy attack: 24 vs 16 --> Hit (2).
WG 2 Tough :18 vs 21 --> Bruised
Wg 3 Tough: 20 vs 21 --> Bruised

... striking two of the Wastland Ghosts, and forcing them to totally drop their concealment.

Wastland Ghost 1 drops it's concealment and begins to scream and growl.
I'm assuming that both Seif and Deezy are more then 20 ft from this one...

Wastland Ghost 2 and 3 both begin to run.

Wastland Ghost 4 drops it's concealment as it claws at Seif...
WG 3 Attack: 20 --> Hit
Seif Tough: 17 vs 17 --> No Damage
Seif Fort 25 vs 12 --> Saved
OOC: A nat twenty... I think that means your immune the attack's linked effect for the rest of this encounter :D

The tripped Wasteland Ghosts struggle to their feet and begin to growl and make horrid blood curling scream.
Sahid Will 14 vs 14 --> Saved.
