The wood is dry because it is quite dry down here. The floor is covered with dry sand.

The dark liquid is not water. It clings to the hairs, is thick, and smells of tar.

"Tar? Razh, you should take some. With tar at the extremity of the wood, we just need something to light up the tar, and we have torch. You might put some in reserve in the scrollcase." suggest Rinaldo.

Rasereit Vundinn, Dwarven Barbarian

"Right." Razh does everything requested of him, keeping up a constant hushed commentary on everything around them, including their estimated depth.

OOC: Would the bones be usable has weapons, as Ogrin suggested?

Eanos, human monk

"A little closer to seeing, then," Eanos says as Razh gathers the tar and wood. "Shall we continue, or do we try down another corridor? Any ideas what would be leaving a tar behind it?"

The tar seems to be very slowly seeping in from the walls. The dry wood and tar does seem to make a decent torch if you could get it lit.

As the party pauses and thinks, Eanos thinks he hears a faint clicking sound ahead.

"Hold, Eanos whispers. "Something's ... clicking ahead. I'm not sure if it's natural or not. Shall we try a third tunnel, or continue?"

The sound does not appear to be getting closer. The party proceeds. As the characters progress, they detect a bitter, rotting smell which becomes stronger as they approach. They also hear scuttling and clicking noises.
