M4: Under the Volcano [Nimisgod judging] -CONCLUDED

Eanos, human monk

[sblock=OOC] Eanos is fine with the light and with sticking around. What happened to the lengths of root folks were collecting and connecting? I don't suppose there's time to go back and get those so Ashnar can just hold on and we can drag him the last 50 feet?[/sblock]

notes:[sblock] Thanks for the input, Rae. I'm not sure the best way to handle this. I did hit the pool this morning to test it out a bit. I'm no Thorpedo, but I'm a good swimmer and in good shape. I found I could swim the length of the pool on top of the water without stopping for breath, barely. This is only 73 feet. I couldn't even get that far underwater on one lungfull. I think the swim checks are very generous. I suppose I'm not a hero, though, unlike our PCs. The roots can be carried by anyone who can take -2 on their swim check. Let's assume Ogrin & Razh were carrying the roots you cut. Hogarth is swimming along just fine (as well as anyone else, anyway)[/sblock]

Rinaldo continues to swim as the others struggle to help Ashnar. I'm going to assume he must slow down once he's swimming in the darkness. Continuing at half speed, he hits the air at round 14.

Round 14: Rinaldo surfaces in the dark. Ashnar flounders. His companions push him another 5 feet (to 105)
Round 15 & 16: Ashnar manages to get his act together and makes good progress for awhile. (to 135). Rinaldo catches his breath.
Round 17: Ashnar looses his rhythm, but Nurlan keeps him going some. (to 140.) Rinaldo catches some air in his tube, which seems to work rather well.
Round 18. Rinaldo dives back under and heads back towards the light, which is now almost on him. In fact, Ashnar keeps it together and surfaces this round.
Everyone surfaces in the damp cave. Heading to the sandy shore, the group realizes that the log is in fact, a log. Unfortunately, the passage out of the cave yeilds nothing but a dead end.

The party's first full-scale foray underwater has been succeeded, although it was scary and not much was gained. And Rinaldo seems to have stumbled upon a way to extend the lungpower of one swimmer.

Eanos, human monk

Eanos' shoulders sink.

"Not only didn't I need martial aid, but I've gotten us into a dead end," he says dismally. Then he squares his shoulders up again.

"Well, at least here we're unlikely to have anyone sneak up on us, though I'm afraid we'll be in the dark again if I seek out the tunnel. If you're willing to let Razh be your eyes again, I'll try the other split Ogrin didn't get to."

[sblock=OOC]I'm assuming Rinaldo's scroll case trick would involve taking another swim penalty on top of the penalty for the light? If that's the case, Eanos will stick with his constitution, heading down the secondary split Ogrin didn't take before to see if he can find another way out. If he can take the case without a penalty, then by all means he'll take that, too, to help him hold his breath longer.[/sblock]

Once he gets out of the water, Ashnar coughs and sits down. "Water never was my element of choice, but this..." he shakes his head. "Once we get out of here, remind me to search a spell to aid in such situations."

"Oh I have one... in my spell book. Never mind. I don't know why I didn't think of it earlier, but Eanos, you could probably use those vines to tie the light to you to keep your hands free for swimming." replies Tenebrynn, still taking in deep breaths to regain his wind.

Rasereit Vundinn, Dwarven Barbarian

Rasereit sputters as he surfaces and takes in deep gulps of air. He clambers for the ground, and once he gets to some solid rock he pounds it with his fists, as though to make sure it was really there. "Bah! Why do we always 'ave t'be water? Ah ne'er liked water, ne'er. Ah prefer a good dark ale, meself. Much better for ye, me fourth father used t'say, an' he was always right, he was." He looks around at their new surroundings. Well, not really new, since there's nothing of interest whatsoever. [/COLOR]"An' all that fer nothin'. Not even another piece o' wood or... anythin'. Bloody..."[/color] Still ranting under his breath, he decides to go examine the log and the dead end passage, just to be certain there's nothing of use. Specifically he's looking for a large rock or a dry, hard stick, anything to be used as a weapon. He'll take a short foray underwater, too, since he's already wet.

OOC: search check (empty cave) (1d20=14)

"How deep are we?" asks Rinaldo to Razh. He also start to help him to search the room, taking his time.

[SBLOCK=OOC]+10 to search, take 20 if it doesn't waste too much time[/SBLOCK]

Rinaldo said:
"How deep are we?"
"Deeper in crap than an Otyugh in Orussus sewers."

"Good thinking with the tube, by the way. With it, we may be able to get some extra air and can scout further. Also, it might be a bit closer from here."

OOC: I don't think anyone actually grabbed the roots, is that right? So Eanos would have to swim back to the other pool, tie the roots on with the light, then swim on. Am I correct in that assumption?

Also, since I'm thinking about it: Manzanita, can we get a check on how much longer the light spell has on it? I can have Eanos ask Nurlan IC if you prefer, but figured this would save a step.
