Mad Max gaming

S'mon

Legend
A New Year, and thoughts turn to new games...

I have 'Redline', a d20 'Mad Max' RPG which has nice character creation and vehicle combat rules, but I've never used it. I have a smallish collection of post-apocalypse & cyberpunk type minis, mostly em-4 and/or Grenadier. And cars... I just this morning worked out that my 4 year old's extensive collection of Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars are in 1:64 scale, which is 28mm scale - perfect!!:D

So, I have a few questions:

1. Has anyone done a campaign like this, whether Redline, Savage Worlds or another ruleset?

2. Does anyone know of a Mad Max type sandboxy setting? I'm not so keen on the kind of linear, railroady adventures that were standard in the '90s. I'd like something more like the first 2 Mad Max movies, decaying cities and Road Warrior wastelands, not Gamma World or far-future post-apocalypse. Any ruleset would be fine. The closest I have is 'GURPS Autoduel Australia' which is a lot more civilised than I'm looking for.

You might want to check out Steve Jackson Games Car Wars.

Beat me to it!

S'mon, the Car Wars game owes as much to movies like Death Race 2000 as it does to Mad Max, but I think you'll find a lot of inspiration in it.

In addition, there are numerous expansions covering vehicle types, engines and weapons- as well as cardboard vehicle game pieces- to be had for the game.

I'd suggest taking a look at Apocalypse World by Vincent Baker if only just for setting ideas and not mechanics (although I think those are snazzy, too, but perhaps not what you're looking for).

Yeah, but I want an excuse to nick my son's Hot Rods.

No, I understand fully- I still have about 5% of my personal toy car collection (the rest are gone, NOT by my choice:rant:)- but sometimes you really need a good pile of cars. Y'know, for a pileup or something.

Hm, I have a friend who loves that game. Not sure he owns a copy, though.

I mostly want something that lets me use Bill's 1:64 scale toy cars and my 'Future Scavenger' 28mm minis in the same game. :) Ideally in one of those hexed sandboxes like the Wilderlands or Rob Conley's stuff, only post-apocalypse. Sounds like I'd have to make my own, *sigh* :)

You have your heart set on certain cars then? I was going to suggest trying to find a copy of the old Dark Future board game... Sadly I lost mine, it was near-mint as well, but got lost in a move.

BTW- totally jealous.

Like I said, I used to have a rather extensive collection of my own. I lived in Germany in the mid-1970s, so I was also able to pick up all kinds of vehicles simply not available in the USA, like models of prototypes of cars from BMW & Mercedes that were only available in their museum stores, or race cars from divisions that simply don't get any press over here. Not just Hit Weels or Matchbox, either- I recall owning Corgis and some of the local European brands.

So as I sit here, I'm imagining playing in your game with cars I used to have...*sigh*

Does your Bill have any British classics in his collection? Lotus? Triumph? Austin-Healey? Jags or Aston-Martins?
