Magic Items #2

The items in the major slots (ex: weapon and armor) are just better than the off slots (ex: belt or boots), so that's one reason why even a lower level primary item seems better than a secondary.

The shield reflex enhancement is a problem for me. I can understand a shield giving you cover against a dragon breath, but a shield allowing you to escape a pit trap ?

Have you never used a held object to regain balance by shifting your weight with it by extending your arm?

I suspect pit traps may not be attacks vs. Ref since a pit is a rather passive thing. Instead the player may make an Acrobatics or Athletics check.

Not quite magic items (alchemical, I presume, because sling bullets aren't big enough for anything but magic or alchemy), but there are some interesting variant sling ammos floating around in the kobold stat blocks... Even if they aren't purchasable in the PHB, DMs are going to have a *hard* time justifying (stupid, poor) kobolds being able to manufacture stuff that civilized folks can't. Immobilization on hit (and normal weapon damage, of course) is darn tasty!

Who said civilized folk can't? Even if it's not in the PHB, that's not an indication that it can't be made by civilized man, just that there wasn't room for it in the PHB.

I guess my point was, there are some *sweet* alchemical (or magic, if you want an entirely mundane explanation for these things I'm going to be laughing in the corner over there) sling ammo. For kobolds to be able to afford them (these are guys in hide armor), the ammo is cheap. They probably aren't strictly speaking magic items, but given their power they might as well be (immobilize, save ends OR -2 attack, save ends OR 2 ongoing fire damage, save ends). As defacto magic items, they should be noted in a magic item thread ;)

Heck, if bows don't get something comparable, slings might be the munchkin ranger weapon of choice! (please no, bows are way cooler than slings)

It's entirely possible we're talking about a kobold ritual that relates to their connection with dragons or some weird deity, or their locating of a finite resource.

Maybe they have to harvest it from their victims, or their own dead.

Tracking down the myriad of powers available at different recharge times is going to be an absolute nightmare.

Or not. The rule could be as simple as: "As the start of the creature's turn, roll 1 d6. A rechargable power the creature has recharges if the number on the die matches the value for the power's recharge." (Or something similar but written by someone who had more than 20 seconds to think of a sentence.)

Basically, if you roll a 5, then every ability with a 4 5 6, or a 5 6 recharges, but your 6 powers don't. Not that difficult to mark off, run, or remember at all.

I liked how they nerfed frost/flame/shock/etc special weapon qualities, because back in 3e why would you ever make a magic weapon that didn't have as many of those qualities as you could put on it. Seriously it means the possible end to the +5 flaming frost shocking corrosive sonic longsword.
