magic the gathering Netflix series taps Terry Matalas as new showrunner

Not till 2026 after Kurtzman is gone, Skydance doesn't want
That's a rumour, and he might still remain to 2031 with a contract extension according to other estimates, they are currently filming the Starfleet Academy series in Toronto which is very much a followup to Discovery in the 32nd century but with Discovery's Jet Reno and Voyager's Doctor as some of it's main character.

I know it's a rumour, but I think it's very likely to be true. No way Skydance is happy with Kurtzman announcing first Academy and then far more shockingly a Star Trek sitcom when the Fandom and ratings called out for Legacy. It's a huge slap to the face to the fans and it made no sense to let Matalas slip threw their fingers. Every dang studio is snatching him up now. I have no doubt he will make a successful MtG series.

The only alleged thing they seem to have against Kurtzman was over one of the JJ Abrams movies that they were both involved in. Why would they'd be angry at something he couldn't do with a Paramount (which has the final control) that wasn't going to approve such a series? And the sitcom, well it might be cheaper to make and it might be connected to Lower Decks ending, as its showrunner is the lead actor of Lower Decks.

No Paramount does not have full control, Secret Hideout does, until the end of 2025, the contract Paramount signed with Secret Hideout is horrifyingly bad.

Lower Decks ended because SH doesn't want to do more then 5 seasons for a show. The lead actor is also a writer for Academy.

Yes Secret Hideout has full creative control of the franchise, but they don't have financial control of the franchise. Paramount has the money and is the rights holder, they can say what goes ahead or doesn't because they're the ones paying Secret Hideout to do something.

Matalas series might have been considered, but Paramount could have been "it's either that series or Strange New Worlds that goes". Things not happening are completely up to Paramount a large company that was losing billions of dollars, and not a production company with a much smaller budget.

Accept that Secret Hideout is allowed to sell Star Trek series to other streamers if Paramount passes on it and Paramount can't block Secret Hideout from doing a ST series by simply saying no, as long as someone is willing to buy it.
