Hey, I just wanted to share that things have gone great in my CONAN campaign. It's been basically zero magical items and nobody in the group has played an arcane caster. The irony is, that the D&D CR system has worked pretty well for challenges and the players are actually TOUGHER than the DMG let's on. Of course there's a couple things I changed:
Monster DR/immunities get translated into 50's of extra hp's per plus
Starting ability points are 32 with extra ability increases after 4th.
Fast level advancement (although this isn't necessary)
I've been very surprised how well the party did against ERIC MONA's legions of demons from the "Armies of ABYSS" supplement. I've been putting the group consistently up against EL (+6) encounters and nobody's dying!
Here is the group dynamic: barbarian(9), rogue(9), fighter(10), monk(7)-psionist(2), cleric of Ymir(9), and ranger(7).
I think the group has been placated from the magical item crutch (magic the gathering syndrome) with the increased ability score advances, world theme, and rapid level advancement (about one level per 2-3 4-hour game sessions).
Anybody else have x.p. like this?
