For the second time, I know. I'm not implying that you were bad or wrong or anything. I just find it pretty unlikely that the wizard just happened to have an undead-holding spell on hand. The only core-rules undead-holding spell is "Halt Undead", a third-level spell. Has your wizard ever cast that spell before? Does it seem at all likely that your wizard had the spell in his book AND had it prepared?

If you knew that you were going in after undead, or if you got attacked by undead all the time, that's one thing. But from your first post, I didn't get that impression.

So yeah, I'm not positive that the DM allowed your wizard to use Hold Monster to affect a Bodak, but it sort of looks that way, based on the information you provided -- despite you saying that you're not sure. I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth. I was trying to infer from what you did say.

Did the wizard use a hold-undead spell to hold the Bodak, or was a mistake made ?

If the DM just says, "You take 6d6 points damage," you're within your rights to say, "Okay, is his sword glowing? Was this a magnificent thrust, or did he sneakily use the fact that I was flanked by somebody against me. Did he reach me from afar with a chain, or did he dart in too quickly for me to use my polearm against him as he charged?"

Hey, stop metagaming! Consider your ass busted!

The DM allowed spells from other books. But for some reason I'm drawing a blank when I try to remember what one it was. Failing my own roll. ;) Also, the wizard is specializing in necromancy, so its understandable he would have some spells ready to deal with undead.

Well, it could have been Halt Undead -- it's just that I don't see that spell coming up very often as a day-to-day spell, and it sounded like they were surprised by running into a powerful undead creature. It's a spell that you prepare when you know that there's gonna be an undead bad-thingie that you need to take out of the fight with one spell, but it's not memorized as often as, say, Haste or Hold Person (which has a wider range of applicability) or Fireball.

Update: Talked with my DM today, he did say another player has a way to help me and the wizard deal with our situation, and we should get out of it. But He also mentioned that I will still lose a level if I get brought back. :( Even thou I made the intial save and should not be down in the first place. Next game is this Sunday. I'm going to try and forget this "little DM mistake" that cost me a level.

Dude,

Bummer.

Your DM was a bit silly to admit that he blew the number. At most, he should have said, "Yeah, it sucked that you didn't make it. That was a special bodak," or something to at least sugarcoat the fact that you got killed because your DM screwed up something that basic.

That said, good luck with forgetting about it and moving on. If he's made up his mind, there's not much to do now except make sure that you keep your butt covered in the future against DM screwups.

Good for you for not turning into a jerk about it, though. I still halfway think you'd be justified in doing so, but it'd likely ruin your game. So probably best to just try and forget about it.

Game Update: had the next session today. Cleric did some divination stuff. We did some plane hoping. Bottom line is we got brought back, the the 3 players that were there had to give up some of they're "life force" to bring us back. 10 years for the humans, 50 years for the elf. Me and the mage also aged 10 years each. No XP or level lose for either of us. No harm, no foul IMO. We then got to finish the adventure.
