Making a cleric, advise?

Also note that some divine feats won't have a long enough duration to be excessively useful unless you have a high Charisma.

Yes. You will want at least a 14. That will get you a respectable 5 Turning Attempts per day to power your Divine feats, and decent enough 2 minutes out of Divine Vigor.

There is also a trick if you are down to zero Turning Attempts: Cast Eagle's Splendor (assuming you do not have a +4 Cha enhancement item). Turning Attempts are not spells; so your available attempts are determined by your Cha at the moment when compared to how many have been used so far.

There is a feat in one of the books (complerte divine maybe) that provides +2 to curing spells per level. If you take the feat it can mean an extra spell not spent on curing people at a very important time.

Cleric is an incredibly versatile class, but no one cleric has the feats and stat points to do everything a cleric can do.

Pick something you like and go with it. A cleric can be a tank, a party buffer, a healer, a blaster, a utility caster, anything, but it can probably only do one or two of them well.

When you pick your pclasses (if any) do it with an eye toward reinforcing the role you've chosen. It's not 100% true that you have to avoid non-spellcasting levels. It's just mostly true. Sometimes what you get is worth what you give up, especially if you're only losing one level in a 20 level progression.

Whatever your chosen role, it is important to remember that you have versatility, and to use it when the situation calls for it. You're a lot like a wizard in that respect - if you know what's coming, you can prep a really devestating set of spells. Your primary role is just like the wizard's standard spell selection. It's what you expect to do most of the time, and what you're really optimized to do, but it's not the only trick you've got.

Just looking at the PrCs, Church Inquisitor is good if you happen to be LG in a LG church. And there's nothing wrong with Divine Oracle either.

Another option, I believe, is Alienist for the summoner build cleric, which is a build I personally think is good fun and the alignment domains make the summoned creatures last that bit longer too, which is a nice bonus.

Radiant Servant of Pelor - great for healing and vs. undead
Sacred Exorcist - extra turning and permanent consecrate aura

The cleric class is so customizable its hard to say what is best. You can definitely find an option for anything you're trying to do though. Good luck.

Well then I would start with picking a god and domains.

Nice thing about Clerics is the feats are just gravy, and help you define your character.
Default path is to get the heaviest armor you can find, use a shield, and cast Protection from Evil, Magic Vestment, Shield of Faith, and if you want get the Divine Vigor, Divine feat and you will probably have the highest AC and HP total in the group.

Assuming you have the Turning attempts to spare, Divine Metamagic: Quicken is not a bad way to go. Being able to Quicken either Divine Favor or Righteous Might, and get the effects of both spells in a single round is scary good. Situationaly, Quickened Cure spells are great for when you need to two Healing spells, and with Spontaneous Cure, you could always drop a Quickened Cure Moderate into a Cure Critical Wounds spell.

The problem is im not sure what im trying to do.

I'm fond of the elven archer cleric in a Forgotten Realms setting. The Elf and Time domains are really nice.

But an important consideration for a cleric is your role-playing situation. Frankly, most clerics are pretty boring in combat -- buff up the party, heal them when they're injured, every combat, same thing. I think it's important that you figure out an interesting personality for your cleric so he's fun in combat and out.

How about the holier-than-thou egomaniac who disdains anybody who doesn't worship his deity? Or a manic-depressive? Combat-shocked PTSD sufferer who obsesses about a tramatic event that occurs in-game? A love-and-flowers optimist? A gloom-and-doom pessimist?

Make it a fun character and you'll have fun playing, no matter what the cleric's abilities are.

But make sure you pick up the Empower Spell feat. It's really nice for Insignia of Healing (Races of Destiny).
