Making a Dragon Disciple

Guy guys guys... he has 4 base classes, 2 PrCs, and 3 of the base classes are warriors.. who even cares if the rules allow it?

"Rules? In a knife fight!?"

Anyway, General Discussion is that way... asking "Who cares about rules?" in the Rules Forum seems a trifle... rhetorical.

Isn't a question about wether the rules are even worth the trouble of considering a question suited to the rules forum? Afterall, ways to prevent rule abuse belong here.

sigh... i hate forum nazis.. it's not like i was off topic.. i could of course go to another forum, and post a new topic with a link to this one saying that a DM should never allow this silly character, but then the people following this thread wouldn't see it.

im happy to see that the build sparked so much attention. why shouldnt a DM allow this, its not like he still couldnt make things to challenge it. and it still follows all the rules... if otherwise please bring it to my attention... but like i said i cant take credit for this build, it is MikeN's

peace out ma brothaz

The Paladin/Sorcerer is a nice combination, I freely admit it. I would not allow something like the Paladin/Fighter/Ranger/Dragon Disciple/Duelist in one of my campaigns. When someone who already had two classes started talking about Paladin, I would mention how the character has trouble finding anyone willing to instruct him in that. All the instructors would express concern that the character does not have the discipline to stay with the class, or possibly even fearing that the character would become a Blackguard. It is something that people would have to be concerned about.

The thing I liked about the Barbarian/Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple is Rage to bring the strength up to truely impressive values. I certainly would not want to be hit by a raging, True Striking barbarian. Could only do that a couple of times a day, waiting to rage until after you've positioned yourself for a charge and cast True Strike.

Even when not raging, the character could do some impressive damage and have the hit points to stay in melee.

If we are going for 28 point buy, I would probably increase Str to 14 and Int to 10 (12 before racial adjustment). Let the Will Save bonus from Sorcerer and Dragon Disciple make up for the poor Wisdom.

Bret i understand your concern, but many campaigns and DM's have different standings on that many classes... and thinking of a progression for that character really isnt that hard, for example: a woodsman does his thing, guides people through the woods etc. then he begins to notice odd things happening (his innate magical heritage manifesting itself). He becomes worried and decides to go to a church...say of pelor or some good god asking for guidance and stability because of the odd things happening to him. Perhaps the head priest is familiar w/ the characters bloodline, or perhaps not. the woodsman/sorcerer is intrigued by the holy knights he sees come and go in the temple, he then begins to train as one of those paladins.... blah blah. there are dozens of different scenarios that would justify this progression. But of course if the DM feels it would be unbalanced he would always be able to tell the character to do it another way.

however the blackguard argument is a little silly if you ask me... just because a character has a mixed past does not mean they will become evil.

thats just my opinion based on my experiences, your DM might think differently.

If that's how he has fun, why should you care?

There's no "right" or "wrong" way to play D&D.

Well, to answer the comments, the 3 class 2 prc is a nice idea, but I am thinking of something more like barb or fighter/sorc/pal + dragon disciple. Similar weapon choices though, and I was definitely going for some large and in charge action. Just going to try and min max the barb/fighter/sorc/pal options soon and I will try and come back with what I have.

Would also be nice to have a huge sword instead of 1h/shield combo for those times you really want to put it out :)

Well, taking the standard array:

Str 15
Dex 13
Con 12
Int 10
Wis 8
Cha 14

1) Fighter, Dodge & Mobility
2) Sorceror, Familiar (Rat for +2 reflex saves, very useful IMO)
3) Fighter, Spring Attack & Expert tactician (always liked this feat)
4) Fighter, stat +1 cha
5) Paladin, detect evil, divine grace, loh, divine health
6) DD, +1 nat armor
7) DD, +2 Str
8) DD, stat +1 cha, Combat Reflexes
9) DD, +2 Str
10) DD, Enlargement, +2 nat armour
11) Fighter, Large and in Charge

Hp average out at 66, not too amazing I guess.
BAB is +12/+7/+2
Fort +14
Reflex +8
Will +9

Str Dex Con Int Wis Cha
19 13 12 10 8 16
