Or you could always do what one of our old RuneQuest PCs did: pintel-mount a ballista onto a wagon, with a big mantlet in front. That'll make 'em think.

Can't really get that into a beastman shaman's lair in a subsided village (tonights game) or in the tunnels below Middenheim to fight skaven or Black Monk cultists (future games ):p

Just tell your GM it's a mighty composite longbow...on a stick...

Again, gotta point out I *am* the GM :p Hence why I'd love to know any house rules/customisation that was done in the 3e WHFRP game you said you'd played in :D

Ah, beastmen. Broos by any other name :) I'll be seeing the GM of that game when I go back to the States for vacation. I'll email you what I can get out of him.

Also depends on where their character is headed: A rogue could get great advantage from a crossbow - sneak attacking would certainly increase that damage, and it would take longer for the slow rate of fire to be a problem.

IIRC, Dragonstar and Relics and Rituals both had enchantments (could be made into feats?) to extend the range you could apply sneak attack at. Between that and ranged flanking it could get quite nasty!

I'm sure I've seen a couple of crossbow prestige classes somewhere.

Beastmen are great!

Fate points are something I'd love to port over from WFRP, I'd like to replace Raise Dead/Ressurection/etc... are you going to use them?

Well, the character's an Unfettered, possibly picking up a rogue level or two later in career (I'd imagine he might do it when they end up in Middenheim, since a city environment is conducive to the development of roguely skills).

I'm not using fate points, but I will be using AU hero points. In terms of raising spells - there are basically none (except in very special circumstances), and magical healing is generally far more sparse (and there's no divine spellcaster in the party either).

Forgive my ignorance, but what's the 'AU hero point' thing? Sounds interesting.

Middenheim's an interesting city. Fondly remember months worth of locations for that published in White Dwarf.

Basically you get points that can either save you from death(albeit with a grisly scar to markthe occasion), give you a +20 to any roll, or allow you to do things your character normally couldn't(like banking an arrow off a chalice and cutting the rope on our friend's noose).

Basically you get them for doing heroic stuff :)

You can then use them to do thigns like the following:

1)Boost a roll massively (like an attack or skill check)
2)Make a special 'called shot' attack, like hitting someone in the eyes to blind them temporarily.
3)Avoid death
4)Do something outside of the normal rules, which is cool :) (one of the examples given, IIRC, is to disarm someone, and do it such that their weapon ends up in the hands of one of your allies :) )

And stuff like that. I can't remember the exact rules offhand, so these may be inaccurate - but they encourage players to be daring and inventive, and reward it with cool stuff :)
