Making a "monster hunter"?

Warlock might be good if you want to go with a more casting-oriented character. Also, the Corrupt Avenger from Heroes of Horror might be good also, but that intoduces a new game mechanic, so you might want to check with your DM first.

If you plan on taking Hexblade levels, 3 is a good stopping point. Curse 1/day, +Cha mod to saves vs spells, and Mettle. If you manage to pick up Evasion from somewhere (say, from 2 levels of Hunter Monk from Dragon 310 - page 45, or 2 levels of Rogue), you're off to a good start.

Also, what "Types" of monsters do you plan on hunting? Narrow it down for us, and I bet we can give you some better answers. :)
 

Well I am not really looking at the character from an optimized standpoint (in fact, right now I'm only developing the concept, not the mechanics); my group is not big fans of super-optmization, and I like the concept. I would probably stay Hexblade longer than 3 levels because it fits my concept better, but I am not sure yet. At the least I would hold out for 4th level to get Dark Companion (option from PHBII).

As for "types" of monsters: I was thinking of him not specializing in any one monster species... there isn't any one type creature that we have fought in the campaign yet (the campaign is very open-ended.. I do not even think the DM has a storyline planned out, he gives us "quests" that we can choose to take)... here's my more in-depth summary that I developed and posted on WotC's Development forums, if it helps any:

Basic Concept
A light melee character with a dark past who works as a bounty/monster hunter. Sort of a mix between The Punisher and Van Helsing, but focusing on all types of monsters.

Expanded Concept
Kalen Skorne is a man with a troubled past and an uncertain future. He earns a living as a sellsword and bounty hunter, using his abilities to hunt down and slay villains and monsters darker than himself that plague the world. He seems very cold, showing little compassion in the face of the usually grim tasks he has to perform, but his heart is in the right place. He's fascinated with death and misfortune. He's a little unsettling due to his no-nonsense demeanour, but has a very forceful, almost dominating, personality.

Physical
- Lots of scars on his body
- Long scar going near his right eye
- Weird eye coloration (?)

- Brooding and moody

- Weak spot for children (who typically are fearful of him)
- Sense of honor, but questionable methods of achieving goals
- Only fights battles when necessary; doesn't provoke others and takes most insults

Appearance (Tentative)
The man seemed to ooze out of the shadows, as though he was a part of it to begin with. He was tall, a little over six feet, and well built, with broad shoulders. His face was angular, his nose hooked slightly. His head was shaved bald, but he had a jet black goatee that gave him a somewhat villainous appearance. He wore clothes of a blue so dark it was almost black; in pure darkness he might as well have been invisible to the normal eye. A strange malevolence reflected in his eyes, but subdued, as if his foul appearance was just the outer shell. Around him flickered the faintest motes of dark purple, barely noticeable, like some bare magical aura.

From your description, I'd have to say Hexblade/Warlock. The PHII companion option rocks, IMHO, but especially if you've got a little warlock in you. ;)

I'm assuming you're playing a human, correct?

After giving it a bit more thought last night, I was thinking of primarily Hexblade with a level of [Urban] Ranger (Favored Enemy: Human) to add some more bounty hunter-ish qualities (namely some skills, Favored Enemy and Urban Tracking) to the character. PrCs right now are up in the air as I'm waiting to see what happens in the campaign and trying to avoid thinking too much in mechanics terms (a mistake I made with my last character; hence the change this time around)
