D&D General Making a Pizza in a Fantasy world.

Just something for fun.

How would you make a pizza in the fantasy world of choice?

Where would you get the recipie? Is there a similar food of your favorite fantasy world of choice?

What ingredients would you use?

Where would you get the ingrediants?

How would you prepare it?

How would you distribute it, if you decided?

Would spells be involved and which ones?

I sometimes find enjoyment in including some kind of modern food in-game, but not calling it by its modern name; simply describe the food in terms of its ingredients and how its prepared, and allow the players to draw their own conclusions. Using pizza as an example, I might say something like…

“It’s like a flatbread, covered in a very mild cheese that has been baked until molten and lightly browned, and topped with slices of cured meat. But when you bite into it, you notice there’s another flavor there - something sweet, and mildly acidic. Looking at the bread, you can see there’s a thin layer of some sort of reddish sauce on top, beneath the cheese - it reminds you of a puréed fruit or jam, but it’s far less sweet than you would expect, and that acidic note compliments the savory cheese perfectly.”

Some players may put together that I’m describing a pizza and get a chuckle out of it, while others might just picture some other fantastical novelty. I really like that “show, don’t tell” kind of approach in D&D.

But whatever it’s made with, it definitely needs pineapple.

Forgotten Realms already have pizzas, so I don't see their introduction as something weird.

I’m fine with anachronisms in game so I wouldn’t disguise what the pizza was.
To be clear, I am also fine with anachronisms and would describe pizza obliquely like in the example only because I think it’s funny, not out of any desire to hide the fact that it’s pizza. That, and because I think describing things in terms of what the characters directly perceive about them instead of naming them directly to be a useful creative exercise and helps hone my descriptive abilities.

As far as (medieval) anachronisms go, bread and cheese were among the main components of medieval cuisine across all social classes. Now, it will take a few centuries and voyages to America before we get tomatoes introduced in cooking (for people at any case), but variations of re-baked bread with cheese and other things on it have existed since the dawn of western civilization.

So while I wouldn't call it pizza, I could easily imagine a fantasy meal called "twice-baked cheese flat-bread" or something like that that wouldn't feel too anachronistic (if I want to care about anachronisms), with even a regional variant that gasp! puts everything on as the bread is baked in the first place!

I didn’t mean that as a dig. I hope you didn’t take it as such.

Fair point. I do much the same when naming the thing would detract from the scene, like in horror games. Though most times I tend to just name things the players will recognize. If for no other reason than to just get on with it.

so the Canadians have invaded the Dungeons and Dragons world. I approve.

yeah in the Forgotten Realms, I could see pizzerias being a side project of Aurora's, kinda like how costcos have a restaurant (and also a plot hook)

although the emerald enclave being the guardians of the pizza does make me smile hard. :D
