Making an "Arcane Paladin" (Was: Martial Arcanists: I need a reminder)

Thanks for the suggestions, but...

1) stated, PHB races only!

2) not stated, probably won't be using flaws.

3) tell me about Incantatrix.

4) I forgot the ACFS- those probably won't be allowed either. Even if they were, after looking at it, I don't think the SSBS would fly with the DM.

It's the one-stop shop for metamagic shenanigans. Even among the Char-Op crowd, it's viewed as highly cheesy.

Understandable. Still, Battle Sorcerer is a great lead-in for Swiftblade.

I may still take a stab at the SSBS...

Are there any non-Dragon options for substituting something for the Familiar? The last martial arcanist I ran, I used a Toad for the extra HP, and it worked just fine. I can do so again, but I'd rather not.

Took a look at the Swiftblade and Incantatrix, and they're nifty! Not quite the flavor I'm looking for, at this time, but well worth remembering for the future. Thanks!

What do you think of taking the Leadership feat to get a Bard Cohort? You get some OK healing, some OK fighting, and a viable mouthpiece for the DM to drop campaign info due to the class' lore abilities.

In PHB2 there is metamagic specialist for the sorcerer and immediate magic for the a specialist wizard. Dungeonscape has Wizard of the Sun and Moon.

Something else to consider is the obtain familiar feat sets your familiar abilities to your caster level, not your wizard/sorcerer level.

The main problem I have with pets is viability: Familiars and Animal Companions have a nasty habit of winding up dead in this group's campaigns. I'm not saying that the DMs are gunning for them, but our Pet Cemetery is pretty full.

Ah. I wasn't sure if you were worried that you'd always have the 3rd level familiar and it would never get any better. There is a spell called Familiar Pocket in CArc that effectively removes target familiar from combat. It lasts hours per level.

Yeah, but you have to burn a spell slot to protect your familiar and avoid taking the dead pet penalty. Hardly seems fair.

I've been lucky that most DM's I've run with have a gentleman's agreement about familiars. Unless you do something stupid, they won't go out of the way to target them.

Wizard: Oh no! My familiar died! I must save versus XP loss! And if I'm successful, I only lose half as much!

Paladin: Oh no! My mount died! I cannot use half my feats and take penalties on attacks until I can gain a new one!

Druid: Oh no! My animal companion died! ...Anyone want jerky?
