Making Crossbow's Useful

The PHB conveniently lists the weight of weapons: a heavy crossbow is 9 lbs, which is well within the unseen servant's 20 lb. limit, even if it's also carrying a bolt case (1 lb.).

Which kind of wand?
I like the idea but there aren't too many spells that would work out well to represent a gunfighter (Magic Missile has no hit roll).
The one I'm working on right now is a Shugenja with Reach Spell and he'll be applying it to Flame Blade. Each charge will last minutes per level and act as a ranged touch attack. Only drawback is it's expensive and only goes to 30'.
What spells would work better? And I'd recommend using a caster who can make his own wand, so as not to have trouble getting backup weapons. That means you need caster level 4 (or ranger/paladin 8).
