Making Persistent Spell to Be Variable

Ever since Persistent got upgraded to 3.5, I've had a dislike of it. +6 spell levels for any spell it modifies, no matter the original duration seems a bit unfair, IMO. I never thought about it in 3.0, when it was +4 spell levels. :shrugs:

Anyway, after reading about other's similar gripes, I've thought of having it be variable in it's cost, depending on the original duration of a spell it modifies (not sure if there are any spells with a set number of hours for a duration.):
  • A set number of rounds, +7 spell levels
  • 1 round per level, +6 spell levels
  • A set number of minutes, +5 spell levels
  • 1 minute per level, +4 spell levels
  • 10 minutes per level, +3 spell levels
  • 1 hour per level, +2 spell levels
  • 2 hours per level or more, +1 spell level

How does the above look? It's still costly for those cleric-1/rd-per-level super-buffs, while still being useful for higher level spells with much longer standard durations. Mind you, there has been absolutely no testing of the above; it just seems right to me. Also, this would apply to the psionic Persistent Power, just calculate the power points to spell levels as normal (what, 2 per 1?)

Hi saucercrab,
I just wanted to say your idea seems very reasonable. So Divine Favor would be a Level 8 spell that lasts all day. Seems OK.

Well, mind blank has a set duration of 24 hours, but I don't think you need to worry about that one in terms of Persistant Spell :D

Actually, I figured that a persistent divine favor would take up a 6th level slot [as it normally lasts for a set number of minutes (+5 by my HR reckoning), even if it's just 1 minute].

Otherwise, thanks all.
