I don't really understand this... What's with all the "thank yous" for deciding to go back on an utterly stupid idea?

I cannot speak for everyone, but I was thanking him for listening to me as a consumer, not for his skills of perception or objective reasoning. By the tone of your post, Im not sure whether you will understand this or not, but it's also "polite".

Can we please stop personal attacks, and over-emotional rants against publishers? We really don't need to get into all this again.

Who attacked? Who ranted emotionally? Did I miss something?

EDIT: I missed Assmor's post. I agree, that was out of line.

Assmor, the "thanks" were for Monte agreeing to revisit a decision he made in favor of his honest and loyal customers. To call someone stupid because the once disagreed with you, even though they now agree, is, quite frankly, immature.

My respect for Monte has actually grown since a few weeks ago, because he proved himself to be an open-minded individual who is willing to listen to the feedback his customers give and act accordingly. I'm sure he wouldn't, say, make all his .pdfs free if all his customers demanded it, because that would be a bad business decision. But he is willing to consider reasoned, rational grievances made regarding his business practices.

Monte rocks. As a game designer and as a member of the greater gaming community.

Your arrogance is showing.

I am not trying to be arrogant, I just honestly wanted to know what problems people had with the DRM format, other than "my computer doesn't support Adobe 6.0" and "i want to read them on a PC that can't access internet (so Adobe 6.0 can't be activated)". Both of which are real valid reasons.

I am just saying, if you can run Adobe 6.0, why all the fuss? Maybe I am more dense than arrogant. It is my personal (and sometimes wrong) opinion that the monopoly/conspiracy theory/evil empire reasons for disliking DRM aren't valid. If you have built your own successful business before, you will know that theft prevention and Intellectual Property protection are important.

Because Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0 is slow to operate (compare to 4.5 and 5.0), slow to start (see previous brackets), uses more resources, its Search function is both slow and awkward, buggy (will not install on some specific configurations).

Also, Adobe Acrobat 6.0 PDFs often fail to open or print on standard PDF viewers like GSView, XPDF and earlier versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader (Malhavoc Press previous AU PDFs come to mind).

Regards,
Ruemere

PS. With the aid of some thought and Adobe Speedup you may solve a few issues. Still, I prefer 5.01.

The fuss is that some people do not want to be told how they can and cannot make use of their legal property, when such property was not previously restricted. And/or they resent being treated with suspicion by vendors, when as customers they feel they should be treated with respect.

Ugh - I feel that we're getting into rehashing the same old arguments that are in the 20+ page thread or however long it is now. I stopped reading it last week after I read the same arguments a hundred times.

I think this is simple: People raised concerns (most of them, thankfully, in a rationale manner and without personal attacks). Monte listened and changed his business plan accordingly to accommodate a vocal (and, who knows how big?) segment of his consumer audience that was not going to take advantage of buying his products through DTRPG, whether because they couldn't (physical/technological issues) or wouldn't (psychological issues).

End of story.

Thanks for listening, Monte. :)

Point well taken.

Again, point well taken. Personally, I fork a lot of $$$ into the industry -- I have a real bad RPG habit I need to kick :) I know we all believe that respect is something people earn, and by being loyal to the publishers we should receive it.

But truth be told, if I don't get respect, well no big deal, my self-respect comes from within. I just dig the products some companies produce and I'll get it anyway I can. I am an uber-consumer of the worst kind. ;)

Too bad we just can't stop all the illegal P-2-P sharing that's going on. This wouldn't be moot point.

2) This should be an misinformation. My Windows 98 Computer runs Adobe Acrobat Reader 6 without any trouble. I don´t know why you have trouble connecting to their site, though. Might be a firewall, if you use one, otherwise...
The thing is that there are two "Windows 98" - the original, and "Windows 98 Second Edition" (usually abbreviated SE). Reader 6 works on SE, but not on original Win98 - I've tried it on an old computer.
