Mallus Rediscovers AD&D

The only problem with DF is if you in any way, shape or form even MENTION even the very existence of any other edition of D&D. IF you even dare to do any kind of compare and contrast, WATCH OUT!

So if you talk only 1E or 2E or OD&D, you'll be OK, but don't even mention your even aware "other" things called D&D exist.

They do have a forum where you can talk about other games, though. Just not "other" RPG games called D&D.

They are very, very sensitive about that.

They are actually very up front about it. Maybe you should read the site rules.

Yeah, Dragonsfoot's got a pretty good group of people in it. Knights and Knaves is a bit more fractious and limited in scope (I mean Dragonsfoot has a C&C forum!) but they aren't as scary as they are sometimes made out to be.

While there's definitely some overlap between the two fora, in general DF is larger, and a bit broader in focus than K&K, which is definitely more OD&D and AD&D 1e focuse (no BECMI, no RC, no 2e, etc.).

So if you remember nothing but 2E and earlier exist, D&D wise, your going to have a good experience. Forget that, and they get ugly.

I wouldn't agree with that about either DF or K&K Robert: both sites support non-D&D RPGs, and a number of regulars there have played 2e, 3e, and even 4e. They're not verboten topics, as long as you're still focusing on the editions/content that the site's focused on. I'm sure you could discuss spontaneous healing casting for clerics in 1e, for example, or how to retro-adapt [your favorite 3.x/4.x adventure] back to OD&D or Holmes (or RuneQuest 2e), etc.

Or at least, that's my take on things :D

Same here. I haven't found Dragonsfoot to be anything other than friendly and relaxed. Their focus is on pre-3e, to be sure, but it's not true that you can't discuss other editions. I'm paricipating in a discussion right now about Dark Sun where DS4e is getting mentioned in very favourable terms, for example. There are jerks on DF just as there are on any forum, but generally speaking it's a great place to hang for old-school gaming goodness.

I just visited Dragonsfoot and liked what I saw. And found the Knights-n-Knaves Alehouse (I guess that's what is being described).

Never heard of them before so thanks for mentioning them.

You need to be careful of K&KA, you know. You have to get past room 25 in a Tomb of Horrors run before we'll even let you register. If you show ignorance of the exact details of the 1e initiative rules by the book, you'll get banned (no saving throw).

We're mean, scary people. Hide from us.

You can talk "gently" in very specific forums, but if you go into General, or any of the D&D specific forums, and even start to compare/contrast "their" editions of D&D with 3E or 4E they get bent out of shape, pretty much immediately. They have been much better the last few years, instead of big nasty flame wars they just shut the thread down as soon as one of them complains.

I know, I have had several threads of mine closed, and seen many others closed/locked as well. It is best to not even mention 3E or 4E on their boards if you want your topic to stay unlocked.

And yes, I know what the site rules are, complained about them several times, started a couple of threads about it to illustrate that there are probably more current board members who want the rule changed, but the "old guard" refused each time.

So you definitely need to watch what you discuss and which forum you discuss it in over there.

I know, that is why I quit going there several years ago, despite liking a good half dozen or more of the board members.
