Manga or Anime Recommendations

I’ve got a membership with Netflix and I’ve been thinking about ordering some Anime and Manga series. Currently, the only one in my que is Naussica. However, I know this is not the only nor the best.

So, I turn to you, my erstwhile collogues and peers, to ask about which Manga and/or Anime series you recommend.

I’m planning on;
Ergo Proxy's
Battle Angel Alita
Bubblegum Crisis

What else do you suggest?

Battle Angel Alita is indeed a good manga that I would recommend. Too bad the Battle Angel Alita: Last Order manga is coming out so slowly...

For fantasy manga, it is hard to top Berserk. It is horrifically graphic and almost disturbingly grim, so I recommend diluting your exposure to it with light-hearted fare, but it is an excellent series. The anime version is not bad, but it end when the story is just really getting started.

Since this is a D&D fansite, I am obligated to recommend the Record of Lodoss War anime.

If you like gunslinging action and good stories, I would recommend the Trigun/Trigun Maximum manga and its distant cousin, the anime series Gungrave. The former is a bit Wild West, a bit post-apocalyptic, and very sci-fi, while Gungrave is a cool mix of science fiction and a fantastic gangster story. I would avoid the Trigun anime, though, since it is a poor adaptation made when the manga was very far from being complete.

Fullmetal Alchemist is always something I would recommend. In this case, both the anime and manga are completely different and equally good, so give both a try.

As a mecha fan, I have a lot of favorites in that particular genre, but I find it hard to recommend a lot of them. For example, Eureka Seven is a fantastic series, but some of its greatness is predicated on the viewer having seen old classics like Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam beforehand and going into the series with those kinds of expectations. Meanwhile, I would recommend three series (Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, and Zegapain) without hesitation if it weren't for the fact that I haven't even seen halfway through them yet...

I guess, if you can stand old-style Japanese animation, watch the movie versions of the original Mobile Suit Gundam, as well as some of the other "One Year's War" stuff before going on to Zeta Gundam or Char's Counterattack, if you want a really good introduction to the "real robot" genre. Alternatively, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing always works.

The old-school "super robot" genre is pretty much entirely reserved for people with a high tolerance for cheese and camp, but if you have such a tolerance I will recommend the relatively recent Gaogaigar, particularly if you have fond nostalgia for Transformers.

Also, I suppose I am obligated to recommend the "new-school" super robot series Neon Genesis Evangelion because of its infamy and influence, but I find that RahXephon stole pretty much everything good about Evangelion and used it to make a better series.

If none of those work for you, try Fullmetal Panic if you want something that can successfully mix a really cool action-filled mecha/counter-terrorism story with high-school romantic comedy that leans towards absurdity and slapstick.

At this point, I know there are good series I should be recommending, but I can't figure out what they are... Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is one, I believe.

I've been watching Bleach lately.

It's good. I wouldn't say it's amazing, but it's held my interest for 180 episodes so far, and I'm not a big fan of anime. Kind of honestly, I'm not too sure why I like it. It has a lot of the flaws of anime, but sometimes it is able to transcend them, and becomes almost mythic.

re

The ones I've watched that I've liked:

Bleach It's a long series and will take a while to catch up. The quality is not always even with the side stories that take place until the mangaka catches up. But the main story and characters are great.

Cowboy Bebop Classic.

Samurai Champloo Classic.

Ghost in the Shell Classic. I really enjoyed this series. It's kind hokey that the lead character is some hot lesbian cyborg woman that walks around in an aerobics bathing suit all day. But the stories are great as are the characters.

Gunslinger Girl This a very odd, but entertaining anime.

Samurai Seven This is based on the Seven Samurai. The overall series was a disappointment, but it had some great parts.

Black Lagoon Action anime at its finest. Good fun in that B-movie action kind of way. This one may not be out on DVD as the company that made it was still trying to figure out who to use as an American distributor.

Blade of the Immortal I just started watching this, but it's been fun so far. Not sure it is out on DVD yet though.

Full Metal Alchemist I didn't like the ending a whole lot. But the overall series was very good.

Claymore I really enjoyed this series. But they only did one season and did a very unsatisfying end to set up for another season that never was. But I would watch this just for the many great episodes that built up to the flat ending. It was a great build up and the main character was very cool. It is basically about a group of Valkyrie type women that hunt down werewolves. I would love to see this as a live action movie.

Some of the ones I have quite enjoyed both movies and tv shows:

-Neon Genesis Evangelion: TV Show, Two Continuation Movies and now 4 Retelling Movies.

-Cowboy Bebop: TV Show, and a Movie.

-Ghost in The Shell: 2 Movies

-Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex:
TV Show

-Azumanaga Diaoh: TV Show

-The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: TV Show

-Millennium Actress: Movie

-Paprika: Movie

-The Girl Who Leapt Through Time:
Movie

-Perfect Blue:
Movie, note: it is somewhat racy in its violence/nudity, but it is the best stalker-slasher film I have ever seen. US horror makers could learn a thing or two from it.

-Grave of The Fireflies:
Movie, note: do not watch this unless your prepared for a good cry, this movie will make ANYONE cry.

-AKIRA: Movie

-Record of Lodoss War:
Movie

-Spice and Wolf:
Movie

There are plenty of others but that is a good starting list. Also anything by Hayao Miyazaki is good. Most of the ones I listed have some manga origin as well, or visual novel.

I would recommend the Bleach manga over the anime, if you ask me. The anime does get a lot right, but there are things they mess up, and when they mess it up, they mess it up bad.

I practically swore off the anime after they turned the single best story section of the first arc of the manga ("Memories in the Rain I") into a butchered, overly sappy advertisement for the eventual Soul Society arc. Not to mention they completely changed around Orihime's characterization and failed to properly play up a lot of the great comedic gold in the entire first section... I think the adaptation started getting better by the time they reached the Soul Society arc, but a lot of the critical set-up for that arc and the following arc was lost. If nothing else, the interactions between the two main characters were nowhere near as fun in the anime as in the manga. I suppose a lot of this can be blamed on the lackluster casting and direction for the voice actors (I only watch English dubs, so I don't know if this applies to the Japanese dub), but a lot is clearly the fault of the anime creators (they seriously lack a good sense of dramatic timing and pacing).

Urgh... sorry for the rant. I guess I just needed a good chance to get that off my chest.

Still, Bleach is good, that is not in debate at all. :) I am one of those seemingly rare people who likes its rival series Naruto better (again, manga rather than anime), but I do like Bleach, particularly whenever Rukia and Ichigo are in the same panel.

I personally dislike both Bleach and Naruto. Though then again I seem to dislike almost all never-ending animes. Even ones with multiple seasons, have each season being fresh and new.

For example the second season of Melancholy is going to be quite different then the first, since she has disappeared and their going searching for her.

Anime :

Another recommendation for Full Metal Alchemist. Very good series. The movie "Conquer of Shamballa" is merely okay though.

Project A-ko : One of the funniest pieces of anime ever made and it just gets better the more anime you know. Only watch the original movie. The follow on OVAs basically all suck.

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex and GitS-SAC II are both first rate series with some very thought provoking looks at some of the implications of technology. Plus Major Kusanagi kicks ass. The movies, both the original and Solid State Society are so-so, IMHO.

Black Magic M-66 : Another terrific piece of anime from Shirow Masamune. The scene where the two bots tear into a special forces group is one of the best combat sequences ever. Older piece of anime, but worth tracking down.

Appleseed & Appleseed : Ex Machina - The recent CGI movies are spectacular pieces of animation. There is an older 80's animated movie which is pretty awful.

Tank Police : Dominion - Just the first two OVAs from the 80's. The rest of the anime installments are average at best, but the first two are hysterically funny and have a really great soundtrack.

The Mangas for GitS and Appleseed are also very good, though very different from the anime for the most part.

Super Dimention Fortress Macross - The classic series that got brought over as part of Robotech. While 95% of the plot is there in Robotech, there is an ADV release/translation/spiffed up version that is probably preferable. The duel between Max and Myria is still one of the greatest mecha battles ever made. There's a gorgeously animated movie from '84, but AFAIK there has only ever been truly hideously badly dubbed version ever released in the US.

Death Note : If there was ever a series that embodied the Xanatos Gambit this is it. Avoid spoilers like the plague though. The machinations of Light Yagami have to be seen to be believed.

Area 88 : One of the original OVA series, still very good. Very melancholy though.

The Irresponsible Captain Tylor TV Series: Not quite Inspector Clouseau meets Star Trek, but that gets a lot of what the series is like. Extremely funny. Later OVA series average at best.

Hellsing : There's two series the original OVA and the later Ultimate OVA series. The later follows the manga plot much more closely and is gorgeously animated, but the original series is still quite entertaining and has a first rate soundtrack.

The manga is also very good.

Vampire Hunter D : Bloodlust - Gorgeous animation, compelling plot, interesting world.

Dirty Pair Movie AKA Project Eden - The Lovely Angels movie, wacky mad scientist, terrific soundtrack and one of the best climaxes ever in anime. The "The Conspiracy of Flight 005" is also very good. The "Original Dirty Pair OVA Series" is pretty good. Avoid the later "Dirty Pair Flash" series like the plague.

Some of the american Dirty Pair Manga series by Adam Warren are very good. "A Plague of Angels", "Fatal But not Serious" and "Run from the Future" are the best and "Sim Hell" is decent.

The manga for Nausicaa is MUCH better than the anime, as good as many people think that is.

Big O - Is an interesting Film Noir series with Giant Robots tossed in. Never quite lives up to it's promise, but it's an interesting ride.
