Map of the RPG Community

Using the twice-ENnie honorable-mentioned Hexographer, I whipped up this map of the RPG community. I based it on member figures - one hex represents 1000 members. It's a work in progress, and just a bit of fun.

This ONLY represents online community, not sales figures of RPG companies or overall traffic to websites. It's based solely on membership figures, with all the pitfalls such an approach may involve. Don't take it too seriously. :)

UPDATE:

Now an interactive map. Click on the country to jump straight to that website.

looks nice :)

now to setup a campaign there - obviously, one of them needs to be a dinosaur island, another needs to be a ninja-run empire, and the seas are sailed by pirates ... ;)

Nifty! I didn't realize how big ENWorld is.

Make the map clickable and it becomes The Uber Portal to All of CyberRPGdom.
:)

I've already started doing that; it's a hell of a pain, though! But the plan is a clickable map for navigation of the RPG community (well, at least areas of it with 3000 members or more).

I want to make sure I haven't missed anything, though. There's a rough start on that here (slightly older version of the map, though).

Morrus, how did you work out BGG's membership?

There were almost 60,000 members during its 10th anniversary last year.

(Microbadge | BoardGameGeek)

Cheers!

Awesome, thanks! I had trouble finding that figure and used a ratio based on number of threads compared to all the other forums. I can enlarge that continent accurately now. :)

[Edit - updated, above. Thanks for the info!]

No problem, Morrus. :)

Of course, because Boardgamegeek, RPGgeek and now VideoGameGeek are basically all the same site with different skins, trying to work out an accurate membership in future of each component is going to be a bit tricky...

Interesting: the notes for the 10th anniversary microbadge say "Awarded to every user who logged in within 30 days after BGG's tenth anniversary (January 22nd 2010)."

Just found this post from Derk: How many user are on bgg?

BGG has about 250,000 members, and about 60,000 are active each month.

Cheers!

Well, that makes it much bigger than any RPG site I've ever come across! Then again, board games are much mroe common. I'm glad I'm not trying to map video game sites, because they are huge.

Anyway, updated with current info.
