Map question

James McMurray

First Post
Anybody know which map is being referred to in the Bloodstone series when it talks about hexes? It mentions that the Grandfather of Assassin's lair is located in Hex 1768 of the Big Map.

I know the series is set in Forgotten Realms, and is fairly old. Anyone who knows, please fill me in! Thanks.

My memory may be a bit foggy, but as I remember it the Bloodstone modules were set in Greyhawk, and the numbers were the intersecting coordinates of the hexes along the horizontal and vertical axis. We're talking first edition stuff here. You'll need the actual Greyhawk map to find the correct hex, and since you don't know about this I presume you don't have those maps.

Without those maps you'll just have to take your best guess.

The Bloodstone series ends with Orcus, I believe, and that would make it based in the Greyhawk campaign setting. But again, I'm running on memory so feel free to check out my info.

No, I'm pretty sure the Bloodstone series was set in the Forgotten Realms. I don't know what hex maps or map hexes they refer to, though.

The original Forgotten Realms boxed set came with color maps of the Realms along with clear plastic overlays which contained hex patterns, to be used to figure overland travel. But the hexes were not numbered, and weren't permanetly printed on the maps.

Bloodstone adopted by FR.. :)

The entire Bloodstone Mines series is set in the lands of Vaasa and Damara. Initially, these lands weren't found in any of the official game worlds. With the release of FR9 (Bloodstone Lands), both of these countries were firmly placed in the Forgotten Realms. Hence the H series can be considered to take place there.

Modules in the series were…
H1: Bloodstone Pass
H2: Mines of Bloodstone
H3: Bloodstone Wars
H4: Throne of Bloodstone

Thanks for the trivia there dungeonKeeper. But, any idea what map they are referring to? :)

I'm actually setting the series in Greyhawk (near the vale of the mage), but would like to hve a few good ideas of distances, i.e. how far should the Grandfather of assassin's lair be, how far should the PC's army have to march to the next battle, etc.

// concern to you.

The original Bloodstone Wars module shipped with a large hex map, larger than the current FRCS map, that was quite detailed and referred to the hex in question IIRC. I had just switched from DM to player for a while so I no longer have access to the module in question. It's entirely possible an electronic version ommited this map.

According to the FR Atlas, book version, it's about 40 miles from Bloodstone Pass. Since both BP and the Assassin's Citadel are in the mountains, the actual distance will be somewhat further.

A more accurate picture of what's going on is possible if we remeber that BP is in the middle of a mountain range which is running more or less directly SW to NE. Go NE from BP about 40 miles and place the citadel on the south side of that same mountain range somewhere between the foothills and the summit.

As you can see, without specialized magical assistance, it is not possible to get an army to the citadel nor is it particulary desireable. The Assassin's Run would require an almost complete redesign for it to be useful as a large scale combat encounter. I recommend a stealthy party, leave the tanks at home. It's more fun that way with all kinds of possibilities. In fact, it could be home to an entire encyclopedia of traps. Good stuff that.
