Map tutorials with vector-based programs?

Jürgen Hubert

First Post
I recently stumbled across Inkscape, an Open Source vector-based graphic program. This looks like it could work fairly well for my mapping purposes - so far, I've worked with AutoRealm (map example here), but I've been frustrated with how slow the program becomes once you use lots of individual icons.

So now my plan is to create the basic outlines and shapes with Inkscape and then add color and smaller details with GIMP (another Open Source graphics program - this one pixel-based).

But first, I need to learn how to create decent-looking landscape details with vector-based programs. Do you know of any good tutorials for this? Or do you have any other suggestions that might help me?

When I was looking for examples of vector moutains and forests for my Inkscape maps, I found those made by Nicu Buculei. He details a little how he made them on his blog:

The resulting svg files are on openclipart.org.

I used inspiration from this to make my maps. For the coastline, I took a bitmap map and then traced upon it with the free hand tool of Inkscape. I then drew a few dozen mountains and trees and stamped the map with them. If you want to have more details, I'll gladly answer.

If you want another example of gaming map made under Inkscape, you can check up the following thread over at the herogames forums:

Thanks for this. I would like to give this a shot when I finally have some free time. Vector based maps would be fun to try.
