Neu Gräfvenhusk village map

This is the remains of the village of Neu Gräfvenhusk along the banks of the Gråström river. The original village of Gräfvenhusk was a much larger and thriving centre of trade for the local farmers before the swamp started swallowing up the whole place.

The village is set on and around a hill near the Gråström river – the same river that the original village was built along and which feeds the swamp to the southeast. This was always the location of the Count’s manor, but the village moved here after the original village sank into the swamp.

Few villagers remain though, without the protection of the Count. The Count’s manor is boarded up and silent, unoccupied and unmolested as the people of the town feel it is haunted, or at least incredibly unlucky. Many other houses are also abandoned, but not unmolested – they have been looted and stripped, and in some cases have collapsed or been burned.

The fields around the hill are all fallow. With the prophecies of Verhu coming true one after another, few felt the need to provision for the new year. Now the fields are muddy and barren, and all the livestock has been long ago slaughtered for meat. The few animals that were being reserved for later use were stolen or killed in the night by those who had none and hungered.

Besides the manor, farms and hovels, there are two other buildings of note. “He Who Would Be Mayor”, the local Burgher, lives in a small but nice two-story stone house on the north side of the hill. While the remaining townfolk make fun of his ambitions by using that title for him, he does remain the one voice in the darkness who organizes the remaining townfolk, and who will likely be the one to call for the aid of outsiders, telling them about the Lantern of Souls in order to get them to interfere with the Hollow King’s endless masquerade.

The other is the new chapel – a wooden structure that is being taken over by black rot. The priest is a broken man, quietly waiting for the end of days.

A path leads from town, through the fields, to the Gråström river. This was where the townfolk used to wash clothes and sheep’s wool, but it appears that no one has done so since winter broke.

Love the backstory!
