[March] What are you playing?

I got Gal Civ II Gold in the mail yesterday and played it a lot last night. It's not a huge jump over the original GCII, but a number of elements do make it more Moo 2 like. Really a lot of fun. They make an already great game better, which is hard to do.

On the downside, and at the risk of sounding like KenM, I found out that they already have a patch for it which fixes somebugs, but in order to get the patch, you have to use Stardock Central, which is basically their version of Steam. I had some seriously horrible experiences with that program back in the GalCiv 1 days. Basically it would corrupt my desktop, making it impossible read anything on the screen. And it made itself run at startup (putting it in the auto load stuff without asking).

They said it's fixed now (and indeed, in response to my protest as to this new policy citing my past problems with it) said that early versions were "rough", but at the time back then, they never acknoleged my problem with it. How do I know it's fixed now? Especially since I am using an odd OS (the 64 bit version of XP) that they probably haven't tested it on, as well as weird video card (not weird, but new-ish).

I'm actually afraid to run it. Sounds silly, but it was really a hassle fixing it.

Grrr. I don't mind having to activate the product. I don't mind registering on their website to get patches. I did mind that they weren't selling the expansion in stores, only the "Gold" version which was full priced, but not that much. But this, this really irks me.

D&D Online: Been building up 5 characters at once in DDO, and all are 6th level with a few approaching 7. This weekend is their one year anniversary. The game keeps improving, which is nice, but I think they released it waaaay too early and are suffering a lot from people who joined early and dropped.

Warhammer Online will be starting up this year, so perhaps I'll drop DDO then.

To offer a counter-point: I am loving Stardock and have no problems with it installed on 3 different systems in the last year.

Take this suckers!

Stupidity aside, I've played a bit of Street Fighter Alpha Anthology and suspect I'll get to Soul Calibur 3 and Tomb Raider Legend once I cut back a bit on the reading.

Huzzah! :)

This month is gonna kill my wallet. Funny, it doesn't feel like November...

Currently playing: Wii Sports (Wii), Crackdown (360), Galactic Civ II: Dark Avatar (PC).

Pre-ordered:

Motorstorm (PS3) - Arriving 3/6
NBA Street Homecourt (PS3) - Arriving 3/6

God of War II (PS2) - Arriving 3/13

God of War II can't get here soon enough. As for Motorstorm, I'm just looking forward to playing something new on my PS3. I've played the demo to death. :D

EVE Online. Grand Galactic War is so much fun, even if some tactics used are lame.

Civ IV Warlords

Not much time left in the day after you throw in real life to do anything else...

Yeah, and most people survive playing Russian Roulette. But when you lose, it really sucks.

Still, it's funny how some companies get away with behavior while other companies spark an outrage at the same thing. For instance, Sony, their stuff installed an unwanted rootkit onto your computer. And there were rumors that they wanted to stop used games sales by requiring internet activiation. Huge uproar over both.

Then Stardock does the same thing (this isn't quite a rootkit, but in my first experiences with it on Gal Civ 1, it did make itself run without your consent on startup all the time), and you hear a collective yawn.

Still, like I said, they managed to make an already great game better. I'm not sure I'm crazy about some of the things, like the mega-events, but you can turn them off.

Things just all seemed to come together this month.

Forgot about this when I first posted, really looking forward to it myself.

So desperate to justify the small fortune you traded away for it that you're counting PS2 games?
